Mike Starr dead: Ex-Alice in Chains bassist's autopsy set for Wednesday, says investigator

Mike Starr, former bassist for Alice in Chains and 2009 "Celebrity Rehab" alum, was found dead at the age of 44 Tuesday afternoon at his Salt Lake City home.

Utah's Office of the Medical Examiner's chief investigator told the Daily News the autopsy would take place Wednesday, though a toxicology report is required to determine the cause of death and that can take 8-12 weeks.

Police do not suspect foul play, The Salt Lake City Tribune reported.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, the producer of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" who oversaw Starr's treatment for heroin addiction in 2009, took to Twitter to mourn his former patient's death.

"Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness," he tweeted on Tuesday. "So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

Here's the lead for every other news outlet I could find, including the local Memphis media. Notice every one is essentially "Carmelo hits game winner":

Killer by Carmelo
Knicks beat Memphis Grizzlies with last-second shot, 110-108

Knicks beat Grizzlies on Anthony's winner
WMC-TV - Memphis - ‎2 hours ago‎

Knicks 110, Grizzlies 108
POSTED BY CHRIS HERRINGTON ON THU, MAR 10, 2011 AT 12:24 AM

The Lead: With half a second left in the game that was tied 108-108, Carmelo Anthony did to the Grizzlies what Zach Randolph did to the Mavericks last weekend and Rudy Gay did to the Heat and the Raptors earlier this season: Delivered a gut-punch loss with a baseline jumper.

'Melo Rescues Knicks

Now here's this ESPN headline:

"Knicks Avoid Collapse On Melo's Late Jumper."

Ummmm... Notice anything? I'm not tripping about this, but I find it somewhat comical that ESPN totally botched this highlight.

My point is that the lead on this piece was so blatantly obvious that it was exactly the same for every single news outlet: "Carmelo hits game winner." Period.

Well, every single news outlet except one. "Knicks avoid collapse" was the ESPN lead. Followed up by "Zach Randolph records 200th 20/10 game" as the emphasis on the highlight call.

Absolutely awful journalism and just bizarre coverage.

yup, had this been a LeBrick game winner, it would be on the ESPN front page, a breaking news story, and ESPN would already have that Doofy SportsScience guy taping a segment about exactly how hard LeBron's game winner was. (good thing we never have to worry about a LeBron game winner happening  )

Random Doofy SportsScience guy: LeBron had to shoot at a 42 degree angle with the EXACT force of a 290 pound man, he also had to bank it at exactly 37 degrees for it to go in.

ESPN is ridiculous point blank. They'll hop on the bandwagon eventually, they always do.

Another day, another game winner for Carmelo. It's OK... the world is used to Melo delivering in the clutch. No need for ESPN to report on something that's normal. Lebron on the other hand, his game winners are a rare occurence so ESPN has to report on witnessing the once in a blue moon greatness that is King James.

Had Lebron got lucky and banked in a game winner, the ESPN headlines would've been "King Lebron with the clutch game-winner to snap losing streak" and they all would've analyzed it to death. Do you all remember Lebron's game winning buzzer beater that he banked off the glass against the Magic? Watch that then watch Carmelo hit game winning shots. The difference in their reactions... Melo hits it like, yea I meant to hit it. Bron hits it and celebrates like a child who chucked his first free throw.

Yeah, plus I just found out yesterday that a 24 year-old client (legal) of mine, who I was very fond of, died this week from what I believe was a drug overdose (most likely heroin). But we won't know for sure until the autopsy is completed. His mom (a recovering addict herself) was home with him at time. She said he seemed fine to her and that he'd been clean for about 40 days. I'm going to the funeral on Saturday night. I really had hope that Corey would turn it around. So sad.

For this board: Knicks have an amazing win over the Memphis Grizzlies behind the best duo in the history of the NBA, Amare Greatemire and Godmelo Anthony.

Solid post. A game winning shot against a hot playoff team on the road is nothing to get excited about. Then you follow it up with a better point, we really shouldn't be excited about the best duo the Knicks have had since the 70's.

Race card? Really?

Woods tried to pull off the family man act, Sheen was always a nutcase.

I still dont understand why some of you guys give a sh*t what these talking heads say. It perplexes me how sensitive and insecure you are. I bet if Barkley starts calling us out again tonight theres going to be another 3 threads crying about it too. Just like Jon Barry's clown azzzz. Seriously who cares? What effect does it have on you? Step back and think about it. Let em talk. Keep it movin and enjoy the wins.

1. What else are we to talk about? This is the place for stuff like this.

2. The media has a lot of influence over the masses. In particular the sheeple, who are sadly the majority of the population. I personally dont give a ****, but a lot of people eat it up.

+1
They even talked about how badly we were beat at the FT line and still managed to pull out the game. There has been a lot of Knick hate going around, and the ESPN posers are leading the charge.

It feels like everyone thinks the big hairy scary white man is just one big fat biggot now.

Sometimes it feels like minorities pull the racism upon themselves.
