people have selective memories when it comes to past Knick players like Lee. When he was here, we lauded him for his rebounding and hustle, but the majority of this board couldn't bear the thought of us paying him 12 mill per season, because his defense was horrendous and he wasn't a game changer at all back then. Even when he got to Golden State, he was putting up good numbers but they were ultimately hollow since they never translated into wins, and when you're making $80 million, that's an expectation you have to accept as a player. It wasnt until they got a coach who stressed defense and drafted a monstrous back-court that Lee's skills were put to good use.
NOW he's a truly great player.....but up until this year, let's not pretend we were all lamenting his loss, because that's just revisionist history.
I was talking about what the Knicks got in return for him when they traded him to Golden-State. There were many Knicks fans that wanted David Lee to remain a Knick. The majority of them believed that if Lee was surrounded with better players a 12 million dollar contract for him would not have been a terrible thing for the Knicks. Remember that David Lee throughout the majority of his career played for coaches that didn't stress defense and with a great number of players that are either no longer in the NBA or being used as bench warmers right now. It is not Lee's fault that he never had the right coach or the right cast of players to surround him.
Like many NBA teams already -- I think most of us (me included) fell into the Anthony Randolph trap.
I really thought Randolph would become a star with the Knicks but much like his other LSU brother --- Tyrus Thomas -- he has completely flamed out.
I also thought Turiaf would be solid (but he's made of tissue paper) and didn't realize Azabuke's knee injury was basically career ending.
So at the time - I thought the Lee deal was great.
With all the hub-bub around him, I figured he'd be something as well. I thought he didn't get a shot here and can roundly eat my crow about him as well.
But while you and I can wax poetic about our mis-evaluations on this message board, David Kahn fell for it in real life. The unheralded part of the Melo trade sent Anthony Randolph
AND EDDY CURRY to the Timberwolves in exchange for Corey Brewer. Additionally, the Wolves sent a GIANT TPE and Kosta Koufos to the Nuggets to make salaries work.
In summary, the Wolves:
Traded Corey Brewer (who we then cut, Dallas picked up, won a chip, and now plays for the Nuggets)
Took on 4-5 million of Eddy Curry's salary (less whatever cash we could throw in... maybe 3 mil)
Used their HUGE TPE
Sent the Nuggets their current starting center Kosta Koufos
For Anthony Randolph. And cash.
And now Randolph plays for the Nuggets...
Anyway, without this huge cash saving maneuver (from the Nuggets perspective) facilitated by the Wolves for Anthony Randolph, Melo may not become a Knick. The Nuggets were in cash saving mode, saving up for the spending spree they went on with Lawson, Afflalo (Iggy), Nene (McGee), Gallo, Andre Miller, and Chandler. They were unwilling to take back Eddy Curry's expiring in the deal and instead got immediate cap relief by adding the third team and receiving the TPE instead.
So hooray David Lee and the David Lee trade!
