RJ has the ability to playmake.
The problem dating back to college is his willingness to do it.
Bottom line is he wants to score the ball. Every now and then he will mix it up but he's not a willing passer. There is no excuse for him to be in the 20th percentile (thereabouts) in assists per game among high-usage players. He needs to be coached harder, and be held accountable for his lack of passing.
Pearlman and Tjarks (beyond the foolery of Desktop) talked about it before he stepped on an NBA court, just to highlight that this is not new.
Willingness to pass will define what level of success this team achieves this year with or without DM. The one thing about GS that has earned my respect is that even with the greatness of Steph and a great team behind him those guys really find each other. I think our talent level will be sufficient to win any game we play this season, but the level they play at will be based on finding each other.
I’m pretty down on Thibs in general and I don’t really expect him to coach them into a motion offense. He is so enamored of guys who can create and penetrate for themselves that as a coach I think he rarely sees the forest for the trees.
A lot depends on who is available to pass to. WIth Brunson and MItchell, for example, I'd be a willing passer. I would be with Fournier, but he'd have to be in his favorite spot. Maybe Randle will be more efficient if he can't be doubled so much? But we've needed consistently good shooters or scorers. Can't wait to see what this year's lineup will look like.
