Yeah

Kinda sucks I fell to 4th, I'd feel much more secure at 3

Cause if my 3rd guy is gone at 3, I'm gonna have to take a pretty big swing

But I have plenty of guys I would be happy with at 6 and 9, so that helps.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Welcome to Build a Franchise, Season 9!! All team pages have been transferred over to our new season nine mega thread. Please make sure that all info has been moved correctly to your 2025-26 team page. Check that all players years are correct, options and EL players are correct and that your total team salary is correct.

Also, please check your draft capital and free agents. Make sure that all future draft picks are correct, as well as the free agency page. If there is a player who you believe should have Bird rights who is listed incorrectly please let me know ASAP.

If you have any questions on how things were moved onto the season nine page or if you notice anything listed incorrectly, please reach out. As always, it is the responsibility of each GM to make sure that their roster and draft pick pages are correct.

Now, onto the business of season nine. First, I'd like to welcome Busta Bracket to Build a Franchise. Busta Bucket will be taking over as the new GM of the Boston Celtics. Backbone left the Celtics with some nice pieces so it will be interesting to see the direction that BB takes in Boston.

Second, we did have one rule change proposal which is posted in the spoiler below:

Spoiler:
Proposed Rule: Inherited Contract Amnesty Clause

Rule Overview:
When a new general manager (GM) takes over an abandoned team, they will be granted a one-time Amnesty Clause to remove one player’s contract from their team’s books with no cap penalty or long-term financial impact. This amnesty is only applicable to contracts that were inherited — not any players acquired after taking over. Newer GM's can be grandfathered into the rule and amnesty old players, but in the future if a new GM is to join, they will have 14 days to use amnesty clause.

Amnesty Clause Rules:
Only one amnesty per GM takeover is allowed.

The player must be on the roster at the time the new GM assumes control.

Amnesty removes the player’s cap hit and salary obligations entirely.

The amnestied player becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Why This Rule Is Fair & Beneficial:
1. Prevents Repeated Team Collapse:
Some teams become toxic assets due to reckless moves by a previous GM (bad contracts, poor trades). Without a reset mechanism, these teams are less attractive to new GMs, leading to a cycle of inactivity and turnover. The amnesty gives new GMs a path to stability.

2. Encourages Long-Term Investment by New GMs:
Inheriting a broken roster can be discouraging. Offering a tool to correct one of the worst legacy mistakes gives the new GM a sense of agency and a clean slate to begin building their vision.

3. Levels the Playing Field:
Active GMs shouldn’t be punished for inheriting someone else's poor decisions. This rule brings competitive balance to the league and promotes parity over time.

4. Increases League Health:
More stable and competitive franchises = a healthier league. This clause helps retain users who might otherwise leave due to being saddled with an unsalvageable roster.

5. It's Rare and Strategic:
Because it’s a one-time-only and time-limited clause, it won’t be abused — GMs will need to be thoughtful about how and when they use it.

As always, this vote needs a majority of GM's to vote yes to pass. 16 yes votes will pass this proposal. Please send in your vote, via PM, before the deadline, which will be midnight on Monday night.

Our BaF draft will begin on Friday night. Draft order with time slots is listed in the spoiler below:

As in past years, teams are allowed to draft at anytime during their draft slot but also encouraged to send in their pick early when possible if no trades are in the works. I will be working late on Friday and then Saturday morning. I also will be at a wedding most of Sunday so any chance we can get ahead of the clock would be helpful. If you are on the clock and the team ahead of you has not had their pick announced yet, please send in your top two choices in case the team ahead made a selection which I have not been able to post yet. Also, if your pick gets skipped and three teams below you have made a selection, your team will automatically draft the highest remaining player on the NBAdraft.net big board. If you have any questions regarding the draft, please let me know before we get going.

Finally, the new league year will officially begin tomorrow at 3PM. Teams can begin sending in any transactions tomorrow at 3PM so all moves can be announced before the draft starts. Please send in all trades with the teams in the trade in the subject line. Nothing is official until it is posted in the discussion thread. Transactions will be allowed until the end of the draft. Once the draft is complete, we will have a roster freeze while I figure out the FA destination rankings. Free agency will begin at a later TBD date. My laptop has basically died and I won't be able to conduct FA with what I have so I will need to purchase a new computer before FA. Date maybe postponed for a bit while I sort things out.

Good luck to all GM's as we begin another off-season. Teams trying to close the gap on the Spurs as they go for an unprecedented five peat with a completely in tact roster have their work cut out for them...who will be the next champion?

Spurs Vote No for the rule change.

I think its a solid rule but the verbiage of "newer GM's can be grandfathered into the rule" I don't like. Where is the cut off? How new do you have to be. If you have been in the league for 1 or 2 years now I don't think that should be applicable.

I do like the idea of potentially giving a brand new GM an amnesty clause just in case a roster they are taking over is just so bad (and someone leaves because of it) we don't have a ton of interest in it in the future for that team. But I have to vote no as Bish has stated you have to vote for the rule as is. I don't like the "grandfathered part for newer GM's".

I would be ok with the drafter of this rule proposing this in the future with the tweak that "newer GM's are grandfathered" is removed. It should just be brand new GM's and they should have to make there call on a contract in the start of that first offseason.

6. Jarace Walker- $35/2 years
9. Tristan da Silva- $15/2(3) years
10. Terrence Shannon Jr.- $15/2 years
11. Julian Strawther- $10/1 year

I need to shed some salary for my rookie so would consider trading any of these promising young players for future late picks/2nds/or cheaper contracts depending what the deal is. PM me if interested.

Thanks for the welcome! Man, I love the NBA draft. Best time of year to be jumping in here. On that note, if anyone is interested in Jimmy Butler, he may be available for draft capital.

I agree with mpharris and Cap - the wording of the proposed new rule should be tightened up a bit.

I think the rule is fine. How many GMs that took over teams in the last year or more are still stuck with a contract they inherited? I think none. So at this moment this would really only apply to BB anyway

I echo these thoughts. I would support an amended rule but not this one.

Same here.

If the "newer" GM clause is to mean the two new GM's joining this season who wouldn't have the 14 days because we are voting on this proposal within their 14 day window, I could go with that. So if you strike the language from the rule with the understanding that this year's new GM's 14 day window doesn't start until/if the rule is passed, I would vote yes. If the "newer" GM clause is to apply to owners who joined last year or the year before, then I would vote no.

Br7 signed a collection of vets to 5 year deals that no one wanted to touch as well as his picks, so I haven't had a chance to have any engagement in the league, and we can all hopefully agree, that the league is better when I'm active, & it it don't pass, I'm unable to be active.

Why should one GM be locked out for 3 years of making any moves because of what an old gm did & still expect him to be active?
