Can we also accept the fact that Dolan has stayed out of basketball decisions for years now? Mills being Dolan's guy means nothing in terms of being a FO executive if Dolan stays out, and there is no reason to believe otherwise given recent history and how he's tried to stay out of the media for years. In addition, if anything, being Dolan's guy might give him a longer leash so we can have a proper rebuild, which is something Phil has half-assed since day 1.
Dolan has stayed out of it for years because Phil has autonomy in his contract. So you're indirectly crediting Phil's contractual parameters for keeping Dolan out.
Further, why would Dolan give his guy a longer leash when he's hired his guys in the past and pressured them when he felt it was necessary? We were both watching during the Isiah years and no examples are needed. Dolan's guys probably feel indebted to Dolan to do what he says because he signs their checks and controls their livlihood.
I agree Phil has half assed the rebuild. But we still have flexibility and while everyone who hates Phil pisses on the fact that we have our picks, we do. We have the opportunity to get a good player and team him with KP, or trade KP and pair the return with number 8. Is it ideal? Fck no. Is it what Phil planned? Again, fck no. But aside from the circus, it's not impossible to turn it around if we get a good player in the draft.
Do I want Phil to stay? Nope. He's embarrassed himself. But I'm not confident with Mills because he's going to do what Dolan says. The devil I know is better than the devil I don't at this point.
As far as the circus goes, we're the knicks. It'll always be a circus. Our team has to put it's head down and win
I think it'll stay the same because Dolan didn't like feeling the wrath of Knicks fans. It's very possible he enjoys being out of the spotlight.
He'd give a longer leash because "he's his guy" and because he knows to stay out of basketball decisions now. I don't think he feels indebted at all, but what you and I think is meaningless.
Keeping picks means nothing. Congrats, he did something not stupid. I'm sorry but that deserves no credit.
Maybe Dolan will hire someone actually worth his paycheck. We don't know. I'd rather role the dice and I've never gambled at all in my life.
I disagree that keeping picks means nothing. I doubt you'd be fine with us not at least having our #8 pick right now. I know I'd be pissed. Hopefully CMFGB finds us a gem

Some of you are beyond clueless. Phil is the only thing keeping us from becoming the Nets 2.0 and trading away multiple picks again trying to 'compete'. As long as Phil doesn't trade KP(which he won't) I'll put up with his drama if it means we don't trade away future firsts like candy like we used to.

"He did something not stupid" by keeping the picks. Meaning, he did the thing you're supposed to do. He gets no credit from me from not trading first round picks (he traded seconds, mind you) because it's the RIGHT thing and what GMs are supposed to do. It's like saying, "congrats, you hit a 1 under...on a 1 under hole" - he didn't do anything special, he did what was expected. Obviously I'd be pissed if he traded the pick, I didn't think anyone would get that from what I said...my mistake if I should have been clearer, but I thought what I said was straightforward.

We're all a part of the circus. Complicit. This atmosphere predates the current regime but not the current crop of reporters.
They certainly don't help
I just want a normally run team and it won't happen as long as that guy is in charge IMO
Or the guy before him....or the guy before him. Minny hasnt been to the playoffs in about a decade. Where's the ravenous press? Phoenix? What's "a normally run team" anyway?
One that doesn't alienate their best players in an attempt to take away from the poor job the FO did, for starters.

Cavs aren't trading Love for Carmelo. Love has multiple years left on his deal and he is younger.

Well, we run the risk of doing "something stupid" by going back to how things were run. Speaking of which, we're probably starting to go in a circle. I think keeping the picks are significant because it's something is organization never did, and now we're starting to do. You think keeping the picks are a given, and should not be considered when evaluating the dude in charge. We'll agree to disagree.

I think, in terms of assets, we are definitely better under Phil than before.
The Noah signing was terrible from a mile away, but we can recover.
Let's see what he does with Rose. That could be a dangerous contracts.
I think Phil is going into a full rebuild now, starting with offloading Melo. We'll see if that is what he actually goes through with it though. It is the only smart path left.

No? The owner has a history of giving up too much in trades and trading first round picks for stars past their prime. Is that even up for debate?

If Billups becomes gm of the Cavs, he's gonna do his old buddy Melo a solid and trade Love for him.
