Wow, just went back a few pages to the beginning of the season. Some of you cats should be embarrassed. Damn, RJ’s making a bunch of you look like fools

It’s kind of hard to trust them yet because it’s been such an up and down season for us. But as Thibs said during the first tough stretch that the goal is to improve throughout the season so that we’re playing our best basketball going into the playoffs.
Can’t argue with that logic and it appears that we’re trending up in that regard. Now we’re going to get Kemba and DRose back soon, which is great news, while incorporating Cam into our rotations. Things looking up.

Any time you got a guy on an 11 game stretch of over 20 a game on 17 FGA and 5.4 FTA...you know you're watching a surefire superstar in the making. Start the general board threads anointing his greatness and get ready to raise the championship banners. Sure his plus minus is negative but the bench will carry as always.

Let’s see if they continue to let Julius & RJ be the lead guys with the rest of the guys filling in around them. Our only chance of being remotely good is those two being actual lead dogs and the rest of the guys able to provide enough firepower for not having a 3rd legitimate 20 PPG scorer

His production as a starter who plays heavy minutes is very important to the team outcome. So I agree the main reason the team is playing well is because he stopped being bad

Is that actually what you think
Shooting 41% from 3 was a big reason they played well last year but main reason is a huge stretch

Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
RJ was basically a decent swiss-army knife for us last year.
He was really mediocre overall, but he was productive and not incompetent in his role - a significant improvement over his rookie season.
Still, RJ didn't make much of an impact defensively, as he was often assigned the least threatening match-up on the perimeter, and he was still largely inefficient on offense (53.5% TS). His saving grace was basically open/wide-open C&S 3s, which he was great at during the regular season, but which mostly resulted from other players making plays for him.
RJ was at best our 4th most important player last year. Rose, Randle and Bullock were significantly more impactful than him last year.
He really needs to find his groove again as an off-ball player, while he continues his development as an on-ball player. He needs to break out of this archetype of an inefficient volume scorer to really become invaluable to this franchise. He hasn't yet - but the Knicks still have 18 months to evaluate his game and make a decision based on his play, and he can still improve.

I’m simply applying your logic to last year.

Randle having a career year isn’t enough for this team. We need RJ to be a very good #2 at the minimum for us to be a solid team.

Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
After watching RJ for the past 2.5 years, he is very unlikely to become a superstar in this league. He is a finesse player and not very athletic. With that type of game, if he isn't shooting 38-40% of his 3's and 80-85% of his FT's by year 3, superstardom is not likely to happen. He will be a very good role player in this league for many years, but no someone we should build the team around. If we are lucky, he will become like a Harrison Barnes. Nothing wrong with that, but no Ja Maront or Zion. He should be offered 4 years 70-80 million contract. definitely no max contract.

Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
I gave RJ the benefit of the doubt his first two seasons and really believed that he was evolving during his mini hot streak, but the more I watch him play the more I begin to realize that he is nothing more than a reincarnation of Steve Smith. He will have his couple of seasons in which he'll average 20.0 ppg, but will finish his overall NBA career with mediocre numbers.
