Maybe they want a Kentucky project possibly trending up. Doesn't seem that necessary with Grimes drafted, since I wouldn't think they'd be looking at Monk as a starter and IQ is here.

I mean, we're not getting anybody good might aswell take a flyer on the guy everyone is low on. Morey however would ask for a ton of first rounders and the Rangers in a trade.

I think some of you talk about 1 year deals like those are what players want. Other than preserving cap space, I dont think they offer much benefit. Negative impact on player buy in, prob not great on the existing players to constantly have 6 new teammates, not a tin of trade value.

Someone talked Dolan into championing these one-year signings, which wasnt hard considering what the Knicks experienced during the dark times. Its alright when done in moderation. Knicks abuse it to hell and back.
If I was an NBA player and I signed into a 1-year deal because of lack of options, I would treat it as a contract year outright and pad my stats with no mercy

And that is perfectly acceptable and what the team expects you to do. People say this catch phrase all the time. The issue isn't that a players plays well in contract yrs, it's the fact that they didn't do the same thing the yr prior when it was needed. Why they sandbagged.

As a talent he is great but this will be his second major injury. I wouldn’t be as excited, more so due to him being a really fickle person. He wanted to build the LA clippers to dethrone the lakers hold on La. Two disappointing playoff runs hasn’t done that. I feel his injury as well as the Clippers Dr’s are scapegoats for his ego. The clippers could of easily been eliminated if not for some heroic play. You can’t always rely on that for a championship run. He ran out on two great organizations to join the clippers. The clippers aren’t a bad organization either. Dude is disloyal and his uncle is like an evil side kick corrupting his ear.

The Knicks FO has been trending more frugal in FA over the past few years with the Rose Co. group last off season being downright stingy so I don't expect them to be the old Knicks model of bidding against themselves and overpaying for mediocrity.

They have some goodwill with agents for the little things they have been doing in getting players extra money. If guys like Noel, Bullock and Burks get bigger offers now because of their contributions to the Knicks success it also gives the Knicks franchise a rep for potentially helping player's careers.

So the Knicks FO will express interest with alot of players and shoot their modest offers with the added incentive of being a part of the Knicks changing culture and success in one of the most visible markets in the league. This may entice some player to take the lesser offer for the other benefits.

Or if those players don't get the longer big offers they want there will be the option of the Knicks on a shorter contract to leverage more longer term money in a year or two. This also plays into the plan for the Knicks to keep cap flexibility while adding talent at below market value.

So I suspect the Knicks will not overpay in a bidding war for players that aren't stars if it means that the financial situation the Knicks FOs have worked hard to create gets damaged. They may not get their top targets but they will get someone that fits the system and culture on a great deal.

If they do sign someone to a longer deal it could still will be one that has great value for the talent level and will also be something that can be moved in a trade for potentially a 'star' in addition to the pick cache they have built up down the road.

This is just my speculation and I hope this is their strategy because I don't want to see them waste this opportunity on overpaying for less than star players so saddle themselves with mediocrity and have the Knicks become a treadmill 2nd round exit team for years.

the difference is that the improvement in RJ and Randle and the subsequent contracts they will receive necessitate spending money now.


the FO can not want anymore because RJ's RFA max is coming and his salary will occupy a significant portion of the cap. Randle's new contract will also be a significant pay raise.


the only way to ensure that the cap is managed correctly is to spend it all before we give Randle and RJ extensions.

I felt they would of been gassed from have to come back from 3-0 over and over again. That or of course injury from gunning it that hard every season. To me the clippers proved you need a big three not a big two to share the workload
