Even Towns only slightly edges all of the other guys as the #1 pick. Of course it's great to be able to choose whichever one of those guys you want the most, but with the #4 pick, you still get to take one of them AND you save some salary cap cash too. The #4 pick's salary will start $1.3MM less than the #1 pick's salary, giving you some more cushion to sign free agents.

Yeah i need more info about Muddy somehow that guy Kabongo comes to my mind when i think of him =/ Its just i am way more comfortable with Okie KAT Russ since i watched them a lot. That is a wrong thinking cuz Mud can be as good as them or even better.
Mudiay put me into the mood you mud

He's a smooth, shifty and explosive PG. He actually played against Russell in the McDonald's game a year ago (20 second mark):

It reminds me of how nowadays when you say anything that a person doesn't like, they say "you hatin" ...nevermind the fact that you're telling the truth.

If you want Okafor, don't wanna pick him justifying it by expecting him to become something he is not. Pick him for reasons trumpeting what he is good at, with the expectations of surrounding him with players who will mask his weaknesses. If he improves those areas and develops defensively, consider it gravy. But to have a mindset which is the other way around will ultimately lead you down that bitter road of disappointment when the player doesn't morph into another prototype or improve his weaknesses.

This is why this fanbase always sours on rookies by year 2. Shump was gonna improve his handle and ability to finish. Hardaway Jr. was gonna improve his defense. Toney Douglas was gonna improve his PG skills. Players are what they are. You can improve skill areas but you're not gonna improve mental makeup, physical attributes, instinctual awareness/BBIQ areas.

That's absolute bull crap what you just said right there. What an awful comparison and argument. Shump, Toney and Hardaway came out of college on their 3rd and 4th years respectively. Shump/ Tim were Juniors and Toney was a Senior. By the time they reached the NBA you can pretty much say they've reached their potential. We don't know that about Okafor just by the sheer fact that the kid is still a teenager. To be so adamant that he can't improve on his weaknesses is comical to me.

I just don't think you will have to prod him. Especially with Melo already in tow, Jah won't have the same offensive responsibilities, will get in NBA shape, and will commit more on that end. Again, Towns is already better on D. But I think by year 2 people will be surprised where Jah is defensively.

You're right that he won't be that center who's able to step out on the perimeter.

Essentially this, I think Coach K would have handled it early if the avoiding foul trouble wasn't part of the game plan. Okafor's impact was pretty staggering even when he wasn't the guy scoring and they needed him out there. He won't be able to step out on the perimeter, but he really shouldn't have to. My big issue with the debate is that I think Okafor's weaknesses have been exaggerated since he didn't blow away the NCAA tournament, before that it was a neck and neck debate whereas certain strengths have become forgotten and specific flaws are being seriously blown up without any focus on context.

Yeah, the Knicks don't usually get very lucky so I'm thinking they will atleast get the 3rd pick. 4th pick wont be that bad either because Mudiay will be our player. I don't think Phil is dumb enough to draft WCS or Kaminsky at 4.

This 1000 times. I remember him playing great defense at the end of a lot of games. He's not as good of a shot blocker as Towns but when he actually puts in 100%, he's the better post defender because of his strength. I really think it's a conditioning issue.

The issue becomes do you want to invest a 1-3 pick in a center who may not want to defend every night or all the time. Do you want to draft a player that the coaching staff will constantly have to poke & prod to defend / bring effort on that end?

On top of that you have the question of whether he'll ever have the foot speed to defend on the perimeter or the recovery step to get back and block a shot once beaten off the dribble.

He's the type of defensive player that you have to spend other resources to build around his weaknesses. Towns on the other hand - has no such weakness that needs to be compensated for by other roster spots.
I think everyone seems to be on board with Towns at 1 but if you are picking 2-4 and you have the chance to pick Okafor you do it!

there is no reason to believe he's lazy or uninterested in defense, only that it hasn't been the priority for him

hes 19

if the coaching staff can't teach him to hit free throws and play D then they need to be replaced not Okafor

Eeeehhhh... With Jahlil specifically sure but we don't 100% know where is head is at. We only assume the best because that's all we've seen so far. I do agree that if he can't get on the floor because of his defense I feel he'll dedicate himself to that end to at least become passable. Look at how Brook Lopez responded to being benched. He came back and played his best ball by far since before the injuries or look at how Al Jefferson immediately started playing better when he was benched. For most of these blue chips that care unlike Eddy Curry or Michael Beasley being benched has some great effects - even for the lazy guys like Brook.

I agree with you that any half decent coach should be able to get a high character guy like Jahlil to give a damn on defense. Freethrows is another story completely. Some guys never seem to get it. He might need to go granny style like Rick Barry if it's still an issue 3 years from now.

I keep imagining scenarios where we get Porzingas AND Okafor and have to rein myself in and remember there's only one pick.

My biggest interest in hopefully landing #1 or #2 is the possible trade offers that might come in -- you never know what nice offers might be presented that could give us a chance to really bolster the roster and/or add a future pick or 2.

We've need a legit lead guard for so long -- someone who can put constant pressure on the D and get us some easy baskets when we are not simply running the triangle.

Mudiay looks like a bigger Rod Strickland to me -- he gets to the rim in so many different ways and for the most part is under control - can finish with both hands.
