Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
He's keeping himself in the running for top player, like top 20 in say 2-4 years. But a guy who can do it with this body type and game on the wing adds an element that the little guys cannot.
The plot thickens. I think his D is a bit overrated but capable. His decision making comes with some gaps but is underrated.

He improved because he had to, he started the season out shooting terribly from three, then worked with his own shooting coach. It cannot be said enough that we don't have a shooting coach, so there was no "plan" from the staff in regards to RJ's shooting.RJ's pick-and-roll scoring as ball-handler wasn't good in his second season (0.79 ppp, 33rd percentile). To his credit, he has improved significantly over the past 5-6 weeks. Until recently, he simply hadn't earned it.
I got you Chanel, I got you, laid the bread crumbs out there and caught me a Bomber.
I didn't say good, I said comparable to young PGs, Morant was in the 40th percentile in that play that season, Garland was 32.4 percentile. These are young PGs, they were given the reigns to run the play like RJ should have been done, he was comparable in the play to them, a good coach would have seen those numbers and spammed it to speed up his development. You like how sublime and subtle my word play is? I made sure to not say good, I planned that because I knew you'd go check the percentiles, and I knew what Garland/Morant were ahead of time. There's no way out of this either, I got ya.
Stackhouse had 6 games over 30 points as a 21-year-old rookie. He was an aggressive scorer and driver like RJ. The stats are 21 are eerily similar, although RJ's the better 3-point shooter, and Stackhouse was the better driver. RJ projects as a more malleable player because of his 3-point shooting, but he's probably his closest statistical comp at 21. DeRozan/Marbury are other comps that popped up, although they were more on the high side. But these comps aren't bad at all. We can obviously disagree about those comps, but at least these are backed by something.
You really gonna die on the Stackhouse hill, shame. We don't know what RJ projects to be because his development with us has been so uneven, he's just now getting on ball reps which is why we're seeing this type of play from him. It should have been obvious to anyone watching that you play him on the ball, the numbers said to do it, he came in as a slasher and we tried to use him as a 3 & D wing. Your comps for him gonna look worse and worse by the day, why Martyr yourself like this?
You're right, I misunderstood you. Actually, I remember checking Garland's numbers as a PNR ball-handler and being surprised at how ineffective he was last year. I guess I was more optimistic about him because he always had the pull-up in his bag. We've only recently started to see RJ look natural as a shot creator. That's purely based off the eye test.
I also hoped to see RJ have more on-ball responsibilities, but I'm fine with how things have panned out. I think it's a blessing in disguise that he was put in a position to get more reps as a 3-point shooter and to be expected to produce in a lesser role. Again, I got your point, and we can agree to disagree.
I'm not dying on any Stackhouse hill, I just said that statistically it's his closest comp at age 21, and that it appears to be his likeliest outcome from a purely statistical standpoint. Likeliest doesn't rule out the possibility that RJ turns out to be better, or worse. DeRozan with a better 3-point shot and worse finishing around the basket is another realistic - although optimistic - outcome - and one I think all of us would be happy with. The difference between Stackhouse and DeRozan with a 3P shot is not insignificant if RJ receives a $100 million contract from the Knicks next summer is all.

Yeah. I was a big Fizdale supporter. GTFO.
Anyway, my recollection of the Fizdale offense was Randle taking the ball up and spinning into 3 defenders or the dumb, ill executed DHO where Randle got the ball back and then...spun into 3 defenders.
Maybe they ran. Since they had so much awful play with Randle, I don't even remember it.

Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
RJ gonna be a Tobias Harris quality player. Solid to good at everything, but not great at anything. Might sniff an all-star game or 2 if he's on the right team. Probably peaks as the #4 guy on a true contender or the #3 on a pretender
