I'm not sure there is a precedent.
But remember, we're entering somewhat uncharted territory in the NBA, the 4th year of the curretn CBA, in which 5 year contracts are the max and 4 years contracts are commonplace AND this is the first year the cap has moved upwards in about 8 years.
You're going to see more and more teams have significant cap room in the next few years, because the cap is goign to go up and contracts are going to expire more often.
OK - but I think a preference for a team like Philly - would be to take on 1-year of salary (ex Stat) if it can also secure an additional young asset (Shump or THJ) -- rather than just pay out their existing players.
That's conjecture.
But the astute fans who really want to put this sort of scenario should do the math and see if such a transaction puts the Sixers AT/near or OVER the floor. Because those are two VERY different scenarios.
Every dime OVER the floor is a dime coming out of the Sixers pockets that they don't have to pay. That remains in their coffers as they try to rebuild.
Is there a Stat scenario that places the Sixers on the floor rather than millions OVER it?
As I say, the smart fan thinking this is a realistic scenario would be doing that math right now.

so I all I can do is react to what I can tangibly see today - my preference and nothing more. I'm not here to convince you either, just to point out the inconsistencies in your arguments since you seem to be so dismissive of the alternative.

-If Bosh goes to Houston, Melo goes to Miami
-Doesn't think Melo will go to LA, but gives them an outside shot because of Lala
-Bosh is family in Miami and they don't want to hurt his feelings.
Somehow all of free agency depends on Chris Bosh

If Bosh goes to houston, Miami has the inside track on Melo, and NY has a problem
LA is not a major threat to NY

Welcome to the NBA since 2010. You're late to the party.
