Since moving to CA I miss these more than I ever could have imagined. Decades of getting one every morning at the bodega, and then gone. They don't exist out here and life is unquestionably worse for it.

And your man on the flat top would be making 23 sandwiches at once, yell "NEXT", look up, see you, call your order out to YOU, and keep it moving. "NEXT!"

At that just a storefront place? That is one of the best for it. They also had a coco bread/jerk chicken sandwich that was amazing.
They expanded to a few full sized takeout/couple of tables places. Then I think I saw one of them closed. Somewhere in the South Jamaica/St Albans/Cambria Heights area. Can't say for sure, I'd see the places when we were visiting friends in Cambria Heights, but were in a car and covering some ground, so not sure if we passed into St Albans etc or not. Just can't remember the ave, other than there was a bus stop in front of it. It's been over 5 years.
I also had one of the best patty/coco bread combos ever somewhere on Gun Hill Road. I can't rank any place more definitive than another - that stuff is always the best based on how fresh the coco bread is and how recent the patties came out, near as I can tell.

My father had a chicken joint in the 80's across the street from Willies, corner of 145th and 8th Ave...Harlem Fried Chicken. Used to take the D train with my mom after school to go see dad, hang out till his friend for the night shift came, then come home with him. It was open 24 hours because it was under a burned down building, there was no way to securely close it.
I remember sitting on the front stoop of the store, hanging out with the crack dealer who hung out by the store all the time because it was a prime corner spot, eating ice cream, watching cars go by, he would name every single one of them correctly, and it became a game we played. Then he familiarized me with this thing called hip hop, naming artists and songs blasting through the stereos of cars. He got me my first rap vinyl record, Big Daddy Kane, Ain't no half steppin'...stole it and proudly told me. It made my parents go out and buy a turntable to try it out, an Aiwa. My Pakistani parents heard it and shrugged.

It was a Pathmark last time I drove by a few years ago, just out of curiosity to see the neighborhood. There was even a bank!!!

This has me thinking...imagine if the Knicks offered a night for *real* New Yorkers. The ones who understand the culture and the pulse of the other 4 boroughs - not just Manhattan - and called it NYC NIGHT.
• You need to show your birth certificate to get in on NYC Night.![]()
• Or you need to pass a "growing up in NYC" trivia to be able to get in on NYC Night.![]()
Here's the first test question:Spoiler:
(let's have some fun on a Friday and run wit this...)

The game is skellies and we used to pry the bottom school chair protectors made of iron and fill them with crayon for a heavier feel. There was a lesser chance to get blown out a box with those.

BTW this is how the kids use to determine who was "it".

Re: How NYC Are you?
Just one of them:
Once saw a homeless couple having quiet, sit down quickie sex on a downtown D train like it WE were in their living room.
No cameras, no calling 911, no-one said anything, just would walk in the train shake their heads and move on, like nothing to see here..l
