Those of you who like folk influences in their rock music may want to get acquainted with some of the fantastic English bands that built off of old British and Celtic songs, wrote their own tunes, added in cool guitar work and great singing and harmonies to produce classic music.
Many of you already know Richard Thompson who started out in a brilliant group called Fairport Convention. Get anything you can from them.
For you Led Zeppelin heads this clip shows Robert Plant with Fairport Convention live doing Zep's Battle of Evermore. This hints at the threads of music history Jimmy Page pulled together when he married Celtic music and American Blues to hard rock.

Before being a solo performer, Richard Thompson played with his wife Linda Thompson. If you got one Richard & Linda Thompson album, then Shoot Out the Lights is a can't miss. Brilliant.
A similar band to Fairport Convention was the great band Pentangle. I grew up on their records and they wrote amazing songs. They have a good sized discography and are a legendary band too. Two of the members, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn went on to long solo careers known for their acoustic guitar work. Their lead singer Jacqui is one of the great female singers.

Amazing Blondel

Fotheringay
Fotheringay was formed by Sandy Denny after she left Fairport Convention. She is widely considered to be one of the finest female singers ever. You can also find solo work under her name.
