Those of you who like folk influences in their rock music may want to get acquainted with some of the fantastic English bands that built off of old British and Celtic songs, wrote their own tunes, added in cool guitar work and great singing and harmonies to produce classic music.

Many of you already know Richard Thompson who started out in a brilliant group called Fairport Convention. Get anything you can from them.

For you Led Zeppelin heads this clip shows Robert Plant with Fairport Convention live doing Zep's Battle of Evermore. This hints at the threads of music history Jimmy Page pulled together when he married Celtic music and American Blues to hard rock.

Before being a solo performer, Richard Thompson played with his wife Linda Thompson. If you got one Richard & Linda Thompson album, then Shoot Out the Lights is a can't miss. Brilliant.

A similar band to Fairport Convention was the great band Pentangle. I grew up on their records and they wrote amazing songs. They have a good sized discography and are a legendary band too. Two of the members, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn went on to long solo careers known for their acoustic guitar work. Their lead singer Jacqui is one of the great female singers.

More unknown and really great English folk-rock bands you really should track down (they are on CD and can be heard on radio streams) are:

Amazing Blondel

Trees

Fotheringay

Fotheringay was formed by Sandy Denny after she left Fairport Convention. She is widely considered to be one of the finest female singers ever. You can also find solo work under her name.

Not sure if anyone is a fan of indie pop bands. But We Are Scientists are good. I bought their latest album(Barbara) and it's great. Here's a few tracks from it.

I'm going to bump this because I posted it at 4:00 a.m. last night and I really feel like indie-rock heads will be excited to hear this stuff on NYC radio.

Great. I remember a long time ago (it was in the previous indie rock thread I think) you asked for some new music and I advised you to listen to The Magnetic Fields and 69 Love Songs in particular. Stephen Merritt is a genius. Do you know Spiritualized ? If not I suggest "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space".

They have a more electric sound to them, but Crystal Castles puts out some pretty sweet music

Listen to Kosmo and get 69 Love Songs. It's righteous and there's a lot of New York in it so you'll dig some of the lyrics like the one about driving out to Coney Island. Good stuff.

Anyone hear It Never Goes Out by The Hotel Year? My friend just passed along the link
http://thehotelyear.bandcamp.com/album/ ... r-goes-out

Sort of sounds like early Brand New if that's up anyone alley.

Also can anyone make a list of a few albums to check from last year? Ill be the first to admit that I sort of fell off on my rock listening.

If you like these styles of music you should probably also widen the net and check out bands that deal with myth and fantasy elements as well as British and Irish folk traditions like Renaissance or Steeleye Span. Annie Haslam from Renaissance was another excellent singer.
