But the process with which they traded him, and the return they got, are the most egregious part of the trade, as you said.
Luka led Dallas to the Finals last year, two years after taking them to the Conference Finals. So this notion that you can't win with him because of his flaws is just silly. He was obviously hurt against Boston, one of the main reasons why Boston hunted him (also to tire him out like the Cavs did with Curry). His defensive rating surprisingly wasn't even that bad for the series, so the Mavs defense didn't collapse with him on the court as much as the optics suggested.
Talks of culture are irrelevant when you're on the cusp of a championship. It's just meaningless talk, devoid of substance or context, and above all devoid of pragmatism. Shaq was infamously lazy, but any team would've signed him in the early 2000s.
I don't see the Mavs as contenders at all. Their window is closed, even with a healthy AD. They are first-round fodder for the foreseeable future imo. They don't have enough shot creation with AD taking Luka's place, even with a healthy Kyrie.
Luka's one of the most talented players the league has ever seen. You accept the flaws and build around that.
I definitely agree that I wouldn’t trade him just because of how talented he is. No disagreement there. However, his defense definitely limits his team from winning a chip. They pretty much attacked him on every play. I don’t care how talented you are, if this is the effort you play with you aren’t going to win a chip.

What really forced the Mavs to trade him was that instead of coming back motivated to change the narrative about his defense and conditioning, he came back much much worse. That’s a major red flag. Let’s see if he changes the narrative on the lakers. I have my doubts and I don’t think he’s gonna win a chip there either.
From what I saw in the Mavs game against Houston, they were absolutely dominating them. They looked like a championship contender (small sample size of course). I know you hate AD but the dude won a chip for a reason. He’s the best two way big man in the league by far (unless you count Giannis).
AD's an excellent two-way player but he's not a dominant force and he's not a player who can carry a team to championship contention imo. He's a great sidekick but the guy's career shows he's not a franchise player for a team with championship aspirations. I don't actually hate him lol, I just think he's always been overrated, from his days in NO where he only won 1 series in 7 years.
I think the "two-way" thing gets overstated - AD's far behind Giannis, Embiid and Jokic as a big overall, as the impact on defense doesn't make up for the lack of offensive gravity. I don't even find him to be dominant defensively - he's a brilliant defender with the added value of being a capable second option on offense (next to an actual superstar), but he's not Ben Wallace either. Not close.
I really think those narratives around trading Luka overstate the severity of his problems. He's not a gym rat like Shaq before him. This is not a reason to trade those players in their prime.
And again, Luka was hurt in the Finals vs Boston. We can't summarily ignore this fact. You should know this as a Randle fan - playing through injury in the playoffs impacts performance. But if Luka was good enough to lift Dallas past SGA's OKC, or Minnesota's juggernaut, then I think it's a reach and arbitrary to say he cannot win in the Finals.
You have to reach that stage in the first place and I bet you Dallas never reaches the Finals with AD. I'll be very surprised if they won just one round, but it's conceivable. However, I'm confident in saying they'll never win two rounds.
I don’t believe you when you say you don’t hate AD
But idk I liked how the Mavs looked against the rockets with him. Still early but we’ll see how he is when he comes back.
Sure Luka was banged up, but he still averaged 29 PPG in the finals. This isn’t really a Randle situation where he needed to get surgery as soon as the post season was over and it drastically affected his performance cause Luka still played amazing offensively. We also can’t forget that why Luka keeps getting hurt is because he’s never in shape. A big reason why the Mavs were frustrated with him.
Either way, even when he is at full strength he is still a cone. I don’t think he’ll ever win a chip if he continues to be a massive liability on defense.
I still agree with you that they shouldn’t have traded him, or at the very least should’ve gotten a massive haul. But imo, I think the Mavs frustration with Luka were absolutely valid. Valid enough to trade him? Probably not but that’s what the Mavs chose and will have to live with it.
