Don't look at it that way.
In the baseball analytics community, WAR (Wins Above Replacement) has become king.
Gerrit Cole led all pitchers 7.4 WAR last season.
Last season, FanGraphs valued 1 WAR at $8million.
If Gerrit Cole over the next 3 seasons can give you a top 5 pitcher then he is worth 21 WAR over that time.
21 WAR times $8mil is $168mil or $54mil a year.
After 3 years who knows what hell be.
Can inconceivable he could be a 3.5 WAR pitcher on average years 4-9 worth the $156 mil over the next 6 years.

 at all the fans worried about length and price of contract. If this guy helps us win a couple of chips, it's money well spent. All you guys complain about the Yankees not making moves. They made one. STFU and enjoy the ride.

Cole
Paxton
Severino
Tanaka
Montgomery/German

That's a disgusting rotation.

Keep in mind Yankees have a new pitching coach in Marty Blake and a pitching coordinator, I would like to see what this guy could do with Paxton and Sevy. Im fine with load management thats what the regular season is all about, thats the reason for a now much deeper rotation and pen. If Cole is here 9 years contracts will run off the books like the Stanton and Hicks contract, the Martian will be up here during that time period as well.

Just have to pray everyone, for the most part, stays healthy the entire year and not miss huge chunks like last year.

Also he seems to check out. Mindset is to always improve. Good secondary offerings. No injuries. Delivery doesn't seem whack. I'd rather overpay and be the Yankees than be the Angels (or the Dodgers) right now.

We need at least one more starter IMO.

So he can pitch in the minor leagues?

We already have Cole, Severino, Paxton, Tanaka, Happ, Montgomery

I'm pretty sure Happ is gone soon. We don't know how Montgomery will bounce back just yet. Tanaka and Paxton are free agents next year. Sevy and Tanaka seems to spend time on the IL which is why we usually get 6 starters or a guy that can start and relieve. The more depth the better.

Sign him. After spending +300m on cole but not knowing if he will have chemistry with Sanchez is too big of a risk.

Might have to sign him out of necessity if Romine signs elsewhere.

**** I'm happy to pay whatever for a guy we can throw out against Verlander. We always had this pressure against Houston to seize the moment because Verlander was looming. Now everyone else is gonna be worrying about Gerrit Cole, Game 7.

Cole compares very favorably to Scherzer and his contract.

Gardy should be a career Yankee. Glad he's back. He sucked in the playoffs but his regular season production is worth that deal.

Also had to sign him out of necessity. Hicks is out at least until the All-Star break with Tommy John surgery.

He just outbid the Angels desperate asses and any other desperate team in the hunt.

When we want our guy, we get him.

I'd like to think that all the fan ribbing about him being a cheap bastard got to him and he this was his "I'll show them" statement lol.

But this seems just as appropriate (just replace "dumber" with "cheaper")...
