They need to ban that sh*t from the sport. It makes zero sense that running up to undercut a player elevating should be an offensive foul. Either jump straight up to challenge the shot or it's a blocking foul, period. The league won't be happy until someone gets their head cracked open on national television from a defender doing that crap.

They need to cut back on charge calls in general. Running in front of a player so you can take a dive flop down to the ground and get a call shouldn’t be basketball. If anything make it a no call and it’s only a charge if you heavily shove off with your arm or shoulder or something of that nature. It’s not fun to watch all this constant flopping and acting

Loved that they gave this one to Gordon.

Either go up to contest or GTFO. So many awesome plays discounted because somebody slid under the landing space. I feel like it does make sense in set plays. If the defender is set then you can't just plow through them. It's on the break where it's an issue.

And I say all this full well knowing Brunson does it all the time.

I think they need to change how they call it based on if the defender is in a defensive stance or not. Nobody plays defense holding their nuts, that’s not a natural defensive stance and you aren’t defending anything but your own package so if you slide in the paint holding your nuts then you aren’t in a defensive stance and it will be a blocking call. A lot of guys will hesitate sliding in knowing they can’t really protect themselves anymore and will be forced to either make a play on the ball or get out the way

That's not how playoff basketball works now, just having a big guy that can't provide anything on offense isn't going to get you far against teams that have bigs that can defend yours while also being able to stretch the floor or score. It's been almost a decade since a team won a title with a straight up garbage man type C, it was the Cavs with Tristan Thompson. The Warriors using Draymond at center has changed how the NBA works, it brought on more teams going small to matchup with them, which in turn brought back bigs that can score to counter that. It's why the Nuggets have been smoking the Warriors the last 2 years, because they cannot go small against them because Jokic will score easily against Dray, and they can't go big because Jokic can defend Looney, they're just out of answers.

The eventual outcome of Victor (Chet as well) will be that they will guard guys like Mitch/Ihart and completely shut down the paint because they will be able to play close to the rim. You cannot go into a series vs elite rim protectors and not pull them away from the rim. On the other end of the floor they will pull the big away from the rim with shooting or even passing, like the Warriors did last night. The days of the unskilled starting C on a championship team are over, it's too easy to defend for good teams, it's why Bam killed us last year, and ultimately why the Celtics traded for Kristaps. You need someone that can do more than just rebound and defend at the 5.

Yeah agreed. Rim running bigs that can't space are a liability in a 7 game series. Especially if their cover is the exact opposite.

Hartenstein is pretty skilled and it's a shame he isn't allowed to shoot threes. The team will need to add someone at the 5 that can space at some point.

I don't think spacing at the 5 is that important if your 1, 2, and 3 are high 3 point shooters. I-Hart at the top of the key doing what he's been doing should be enough to bring the D's 5 out. Else, if they stay camping, they're getting 3 second calls all day long. The other thing is I-Hart can drive to the basket, and he does have a post move or 2.

But this is all moot. Let's worry about today's game and not about Victor in a couple of years.

Don't forget IHart's ability to make reads as well. That's a highly undervalued skill for a big to have.

You're right though. It's still 2024. Victor isn't the roadblock, it's the Celtics.

Yeah that gif is exactly the problem. That's not a natural defensive stance or motion. The defender is literally undercutting Aaron Gordon on the gather. That's a blocking foul and honestly due to the danger of the play, I'd call it a flagrant.

Jumping up (straight up) and challenging on the ball is much cleaner and safer.

Randle suffering a dislocation because of it should be enough evidence for the league to get that out of the game.

Imagine playing pick up and someone does this to a player on the break. That's an instant fight.

The "unnatural defensive stance" could be contestable but I like it.

Spacing from a 5 is highly important against good teams, the further you go in the playoffs the more likely you are to run into a team that will penalize you for being unskilled. You saw it last night, the Warriors are starting a 6'6" guy at center, they are able to rebound so well because despite the lack of size at the 5 your center has to guard someone 24 feet from the rim while their guards and wings can crash the boards. They have been doing that to centers for almost 10 years now, since the first time the death lineup killed the Grit and Grind Grizzlies, it's why Marc Gasol developed a 3 after that. You also don't get a 3 second call if your man has the ball and you completely disregard defending him and stand in the lane.

IHart can pass but he's no threat to score or space, and our other center can't score, space or pass. Thats fine against other centers like them (Cavs) but against the Elite it won't cut it and becomes a hindrance. This is why the Celtics gave up rebounding in Robert Williams for spacing / scoring in Kristaps.

And the Celtics have exactly the type of C that poses a problem. He can defend our guys and since they're near the rim his rim protection is amplified and then he pulls them away from the rim when he's on offense.

We are 0-4 vs them and have lost by an average of 11ppg, which is ugly.

I think the April 11th game will be a decent gauge unless everyone sits. OG changes the defensive approach. Not that saying this means much, but their 1st game was a pretty tight game.

No I just rather see an actual basketball play where a defender makes an attempt to play defense and not a dirty play where he just looks to slide under a guy going up to undercut him. Those collisions put players in serious risk of injury and it’s the same play that resulted in Randle dislocating his shoulder. It’s not defense

If you contest it's a foul on the defender. If a player is charging in like a bull, you can't match force with force. That's a foul. Crumple like paper is the only legal recourse.

Push offs, forearm shoves, moving screens and traveling should be taken out of the game too.

That doesn't mean that undercutting players about to elevate should be in the game either. All of this stuff needs to go.
