I would like to see the look on your face when he actually signs that deal and is on the team for the rest of his career.

What kind of mental midget admits that? How do you bring back a player that admits they quit on a season for crying out loud.
It's human nature to doubt your leadership if you don't believe they know what their doing. There's nothing wrong with this. Have some perspective.

Amare said it more than once. He said it during the exit interview and he said it after the very last game. Said players did not buy into what the coach was selling.
Tyson Chandler definitely. Some have added Felton to the list but, I don't think his struggles were due to buying in. He had BIGGER problem with gun thing and his ex-wife trying to destroy him. Not that he DIDN'T bring all of that on himself. The wife hate and the legal problems...all his own fault.

yeah, tyson & amare strike me as two of the biggest culprits. shump too.

Buggin Out wrote:ORANGEandBLUE wrote:People are dubious about Melo taking less for the good of the team because he's been so adamant about opting out.
I honestly think Melo had no intention of leaving the Knicks. He just wanted to be wined and dined ala Dwight Howard. He wanted to be a hero but the narrative has changed
Coming into the season this was his plan:
>Have a competitive season like last year
>Opt out with fans begging for him back
>Meet with other teams
>Take a paycut (20 Mil) and sign a long deal with the Knicks.
>Win or Lose fans love him cause he shows he is about winning
Now the narrative is like this:
>Terrible season
>Fans still want Melo, not at Kobe-Max
>Here comes Phil
>If Melo takes a paycut it will look like Phil made him his b*tch, even if Melo intended to all along
I honestly think Melo had this thought out long in advanced. Especially for his image in New York, he wants to be seen as a winner. His brand is worth more than the extra million he would receive taking the Kobe-Max. You don't want to be on a long term deal in NY when people hate you.

Melo agreed to take less a long time ago, you seem to be missing that

Phil said he hopes Melo is true to his word, nothing is agreed to. ....just words.

Nah he did during the All Star Break when he said even if he has to show up on Dolan's doorstep he'd take less.
kosmovitelli wrote:j4remi wrote:Melo's not getting the Kobe Max from Phil...that's what I got from this.
Yep. Same for me. It's really odd to make that public. Almost like he's pushing Melo out. I don't think it's the case but he's already putting the blame on Melo by saying he's hoping he'll be true to his word. Either Melo made a strong commitment when Phil asked him if he was ready to take a paycut or Phil's trying to push him out.
Anyway, as I've said a few times already, it's difficult to ask Melo to take a paycut at this point. Phil mentioned Tim Duncan and Lebron but Tim Duncan did it when the Spurs were already a championship caliber team and they already had Parker and Ginobili. Despite taking a paycut, Duncan was still the highest paid player on the Spurs roster. Lebron did it in order to play with Wade and Bosh. Melo knows Amare and Tyson will likely remain on the roster next year and they'll be gone in 2015. What kind of sacrifice can you ask at this point ? If the Knicks were under the cap and could sign both Rondo and Marc Gasol then you could ask Melo to take less money in order to make room for those players, you'd know exactly how much money you need Melo to leave on the table in order to assemble a winning team. At this point, both Phil Jackson and Melo are in the dark. If Melo takes less money and Knicks strike out in 2015 then Melo will be screwed.
For what it's wortj, even if Melo accepts a contract starting at $18 million then it will be almost $19.5 million in 2015 (with 7.5% raise). It's also hard to take a paycut when Amare makes $20+ million ! Also it's difficult to ask Melo to take a paycut if his future teammates in 2015 will make more money than him.
The way I see things, either Phil wouldn't mind seeing Melo leave via free agency or more likely he's just setting the bar for future free agents. If he offers Melo a contract starting at $17 million then in 2015, he'll apply the same logic for free agents, he will only pay market value. Basically, he's not really asking Melo to take a paycut to help the team, he's simply asking him to accept a contract reflecting his basketball value. Melo's not Kobe and he's not worth $24 mil per season. He wants him to acknowledge that. I hope that's the case and he means the times of overpaying are over and losing a player to free agency isn't the apocalypse for the team and it's something he's willing to accept if the price isn't right.
