And KP is going to have a hard time without Melo. No more open looks off of teams doubling and now they will be doubling him

Thanks for telling us something new? We all know this and KP has said it many times.

This is how he has to learn is by being the focal point. He has to get better and having opposing teams game plan around him will make him better.

KP seems to create his own just fine for his home team. Even he has SF game, if he just uses his 7-3 height to his advantage he'll be fine.

You know what happens when KP gets double teamed this coming season? He gets a shot off and gets to the line or finds the open man.

That's good. That's why I'm hoping to see him average 3+ assists per game. He's so tall he can become a good passer.

Based on the discussion in this thread I don't think people realize how much easier Melo made life for KP. Therefore I don't think "we all know" is an appropriate response.

I do agree this will be a great learning time for him. And the new offense will be interesting to see.

All great players have defenses focused on them. Not a big thing here, just normal progression.

Neither Atlanta or the French team had offensive low post presence. So THJ and Ntilikina should have opportunities to score, as both Willy and Kanter can destroy teams down low and get to the line with regularity.

I agree, if KP has that facilitator mindset he can easily average 3-4 assists. Without Melo, he'll be double and triple teamed and there will always be an open teammate. He will only need to find them.

tanking in the sense that most understand it is just a bad idea. your definition is a good idea, but it assumes that the ceiling of the team is 30 wins. i am not sure they're going to be that bad. i think they are capable of winning at least 35 games, maybe closer to 40 games.

i agree

thats why you limit the mins of guys who can perform at a high level and why you let the rookies run out the games

Id like most to see KP playing 30 mins and us finishing the games with Frank, Baker, THjr, KP and willy on the floor. or swap Baker for McDermott if he shows a future with us. Or Kuz.

Whatever

You're talking as if Melo was passing out of doubles or triples

exactly LOL   . in fact, i hope KP *does* get doubled so he 's forced to keep his court vision and find the open man. you know, like dirk finally learned how to do the year the mavs punished the heat. that would be a thing of beauty if KP passes out of doubles, getting tim duncan hockey assists or finding cutters for easy layups. just because you know who almost never did doesn't mean that sort of player doesn't exist-- and KP should become that player.

and you still see things through rose colored glasses.

melo was defended 1 on 1 all of last year, this isn't me making something up ... this is true. i know this because i would constantly mentioned how melo isn't being doubled team last year in all the game threads.

in fact there was a point where kristaps was getting double teamed and melo was the beneficiary.

god shammgod wrote:http://nypost.com/2017/09/26/kristaps-porzingis-offers-some-insight-into-his-leadership-style/

With a monster slam dunk off a fast-break drill, Kristaps Porzingis finished up his first Knicks practice with Carmelo Anthony wiped from the roster. His teammates surrounded Porzingis for high-fives.

Porzingis is now “The Man” — and leader — at age 21. Anthony’s six-year, seven-month reign as the Knicks’ franchise player truly ended on the practice court Tuesday.

“I think it’s going to come to me naturally,’’ Porzingis said of leadership. “I don’t need to force it. First thing I’ll do is be the hardest-working guy. We have a bunch of guys who work hard. I will work hard also and give an example. From that hard work, you can be a leader and give it to your teammates.

“I’m still trying to get better as a basketball player, but also working on those leadership skills. As we move forward, I’m only going to get better at it.”

Anthony was often criticized for lacking dynamic leadership. Anthony admitted he wasn’t into rah-rah-speeches or getting in a teammate’s face. What Anthony, popular in the locker room, did best as a leader was become a teammate’s friend.

Porzingis said he doesn’t believe he’ll be making many speeches either.

“There’s moments I talk, but it’s mostly about basketball and talking about things I see,’’ Porzingis said. “I might be more vocal during a game or at halftime than motivating guys [pregame]. I’m more that kind of guy.”

Working out all summer in Latvia and playing for his country’s national team, Porzingis said he’s up to 240 pounds after ending last season at 234. But increasing his strength, he said, is the key to helping his low-post play — which the Knicks coaching staff wants improved. Nevertheless, the Knicks never got to sit down with Porzingis to go over his offseason program after he skipped his exit meeting.

“The goal this summer wasn’t going to get bigger and gain weight,’’ Porzingis said. “The weight is going to come to me naturally. It was to get stronger, get more explosive, kind of get tighter. That’s going to help me everywhere on the floor. ‘’

In averaging 23 points during the European championships, Porzingis scored inside and out.

“I worked on my post game,’’ Porzingis said. “I played a lot more in the post in Euro basket. They’re not that physical. But I think I improved on that and I’m excited to show that in the games. That’s one thing I want to show. And I also, I worked on some moves and also I’m excited for a new season, for new things that people are going to see from me.”

For the second straight day, Porzingis showed no signs of the anger he felt when he left the country in late April, disgruntled with the franchise’s chaotic state. In place of ousted president Phil Jackson, there was the new brain trust Steve Mills and Scott Perry standing side by side Tuesday, observing the court where Porzingis played in a scrimmage and did drills. Perry didn’t meet Porzingis until Monday.

“We have a lot of new faces and not only the players, but also the training staff,’’ Porzingis said. “A lot of new faces. It’s good to have new people that want to work, that want to work hard. Everybody is motivated.

“Hopefully we can do something special this year and surprise everybody.”

Jesus. The bolded part makes me want to shed a tear. That is EXACTLY what I want to hear and EXACTLY how he should be approaching it. He's going to take a BIG step forward this year if he stays healthy.

My excitement levels for KP individually and this team developing together are going through the roof.

Stay the course when he struggles too. Even if it's right out of the gate. He's going to do fine. I'm excited to watch a young team grow together.

Yes. There were several situations like this at the Eirobasket when KP had 4 defeders on him (I remember in Montenegro game too, might be other as well) and those ended with a pass to a teammate for an open 3-pointer.
