I'm not even in favor of resigning Melo to the super max and attempting to pair him with a stud FA in 2015(Anthony will be 31 by then), with absolutely no one to surround them with. That's a pipe dream that failed once, and it will in all likelihood fail again.
With how week the East is, you should be able to make it to the second round if you get healthy. And while you have Anthony in his prime and Chandler, you have no option but to compete. If Anthony was the only max contract it would make sense to trade him and start over, but what would be the point of doing so with Chandler, Stoudamire and Bargnani still around? If you do try to rebuild, what would be the chances of getting studs such as Anthony and Chandler? Do you think Atlanta really has a better team? I do not. All you need to do is go small even if it means benching veterans on big salaries.
If I were coaching NY I would start Chandler, Anthony, Smith, Shumpert and Felton with Bargnani, Hardaway and Prigioni off the bench. I would cut both MWP and Martin and sign one young stud in their place. Keep one roster place open.
