I've thought from the beginning that Melo is either teaming up with Lebron or staying in NY.
The delay, IMO, is Carmelo waiting to see what Lebron does.
And if he can team up with him somewhere.

In april 2010, Lebron said "I got a goal, and it's a huge goal, and that's to bring an NBA championship here to Cleveland and I won't stop until I get it". Three months later, he left Cleveland for Miami !

Just like Lebron wasn't supposed to say publicly he wanted to leave Cleveland, Melo couldn't say he wanted the max. He had to say he was willing to take less money. That's just PR.

I don't think he's using the Lakers, he's just taking his time. He enjoys every minute of free agency.

It could also be a way to get back at Phil Jackson (when he said he hoped Melo would be true to his word and take less money).

If, as expected, he returns and there's a press conference, Melo will be asked questions about that paycut talk. Same for Phil. Both need a story to justify the contract. The Lakers offer will indeed help their case (Phil had to match in order to keep Melo and Melo can argue Knicks already added salaries past 2015 with Calderon, Knicks are over the apron and no flexibility so there was no reason for him to take a paycut at this point). He can also use the rising salary cap in 2015 as an excuse.

Anyway, the fans will be so happy he remained a Knick, they won't really care about his max contract during the off-season. But he can expect a backlash if Knicks start the season like last year and fail to make the playoffs next april.

April 2, 2010

In an interview on NBA TV, LeBron James indicated that he "won't stop" until he reaches his goal of winning a title in Cleveland.

"I got a goal, and it's a huge goal, and that's to bring an NBA championship here to Cleveland," James said. "And I won't stop until I get it."

Taken literally, James' statement is newsworthy because it would mean that the Cavs' superstar, who can become a free-agent this summer, would stay in Cleveland at least as long as it takes to bring the city an NBA championship.

SAS said NY is the front runner, Melo wants a no-trade clause in the contract.

Mentioned Philly as an option to take an Amare/Shump trade for a salary dump.

Mentioned if Bosh opts out, Miami is a possibility. Mentioned Houston, Dallas, LA as still in the mix. Ended it with a "but the Melo I know loves his money."

Tell him to sign a 2 year contract then, that way he'll get his no-trade clause.

I really hoping Melo goes somewhere else, the dude has a lot of miles and is two years away from totally breaking down like Wade, dont do it, we've seen the best of him, incredible scorer and one of the best Knicks ever in short period of time.

Don't hold your breath, so many BS rumors !

For example, Joe Lull started a BS rumor and Dan Gilbert immediatly responded and shot it down ! LOL

I understand Melo wanting some kind of trade protection. The guy doesn't want to go to Minnesota or Memphis or Detroit.

However I wouldn't give him a complete no trade clause. I would work out with him that these are the places we could trade you too if we decided to go in another direction down the road (Chicago, LA, dallas, Houston, Miami) the bigger market teams.

I'm not saying that he won't end up back in NY if Lebron goes to Cleveland or if Chicago can't get him his max contract, but if he really wanted to sign in NY, then what is he waiting for?

This.

There either is a no-trade clause or there isn't. He shouldn't get one. Trade his maxed out fat ass to Milwaukee at the deadline.

There are a ton of reasons why he may not have agreed already.

1. Maybe he has his eyes on another team like some of y'all are saying

2. Working out finer details and specifics. SAS says he wants a no trade clause.

3. He really did want a few days to let it all sink in

4. He likes how this has gotten everyone all fired up. NBA star egos are something that many of us have probably never truly experienced. He seriously may be loving everyone wondering what he's gonna do.

5. Variables that we have no clue about

This is all my speculation. What the hell do I know
