Tarpley was a guy who I thought might pan out, but obviously didn't.

Wasn't he pretty touted as a minor league reliever? I might be confusing him with some prospect the Yanks traded within the last 5 years or longer though. :D

Ah, Tarpely came over in the Nova trade.

There was another guy, who didn't work out, who was a good college reliever but never made it with the Yanks after a few years on their farm.

Melancon.

I thought there was one more guy after him, but he's definitely one

Jacob Lindgren? He was drafted high but ended up being released, not traded, and hasn't progressed beyond high-A since.

Mark Montgomery was a reliever that had absolutely dominating mL numbers out of college, made it to AAA, but didn't pan out.

The only other prospect-ish true reliever of note I can recall them straight up trading in a memorable deal after he made the Majors was James Pazos.

yea Montgomery could never control the walks, which was why he never made it up to the Yanks.

there was once a guy named JB Cox that the Yanks drafted to be a reliever. However, his temper and a bar fight derailed all of that quickly

Cox was definitely dominant and fits the criteria, except he was before Melancon, not after.

hmm, only ones that come up to mind:

Nick Goody
Dietrich Enns
Nick Rumbelow
James Kaprielian
Chance Adams

We gave up on Caleb Smith to clear up space to bid on Ohtani if I'm correct.

Ding!

Yes, I should have emphasized a guy who was touted in A,AA, AAA, but didn't pan out, or was only "ok" in the majors.

Melancon was a good one though. He had a few really good peak years. Sort of "one who got away", though the Yanks always had pretty good relief anyway

I love how the Red Sox blamed us for cheating by using the bullpen phone and it ends up being that the pitching coach was calling the bullpen to ask if a pitch was a strike or not.

I just don't understand the thought process behind not disciplining any of the players if this was mainly "player driven". Like these guys aren't fuqqing kids. They don't need to be protected. They knew exactly what they were doing. They should have been hit just as hard.

So effing weak of the MLB to not suspend Beltran because of that too... You completely undermine your own discipline by protecting the players here.

Honestly that's not severe enough. Should have banned the owner (like they did George Steinbrenner and Marge Schott) and taken away all their international pool money away for 2 years as well. Take the picks and bonus pool money and give it to the teams that the Astros beat on the way to the world series title. 4 picks spread out would take care of all the rounds of the playoffs. The bonus pool money can be split the same way to the teams they beat in the playoffs.

i'd have definitely tacked on international pool money. The Yanks should get their compensation pick back.

Suspending the owner would be nice, but probably would have been appealed and I don't think Manfred has the gall to deal with that.

the players provided the juicy details. So they probably got amnesty for cooperating.

Yep definitely. As it is the teams that the Astro's screwed are still screwed and haven't gotten any compensation back for being screwed.

Return to New York Knicks
