Are the Raps for sure matching any offer sheet? Because I see a very real path to loss on the TOR side if IQ still has the lofty demands of last offseason front and center this summer and either gets away or forces TOR to match a WILD number. Though, I guess that's the benefit of acquiring the RFA side of the deal with Quick, and not the Anunoby side where he's unrestricted and the Knicks can be left with nothing.

I don’t care about his facial expressions as long as he does the right things on the court.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe revealed former New York Knicks wing R.J. Barrett’s contract was viewed as a “toxic asset” by some anonymous NBA front office members and coaches following his trade to the Toronto Raptors. “I’ve always said if there’s a continuum of RJ Barrett optimism and pessimism—and over here on the pessimistic side is like, ‘He just stinks, he’s a toxic asset.’ And that is a word that got thrown around yesterday in my conversations with front office people and coaches—toxic asset. Like you’re swallowing his contract,” Lowe said during the latest edition of The Lowe Post podcast (20:30 mark).

Obviously Toronto didn't view his contract that way else we wouldn't have been able to trade him.

But for real, let's keep RJ talk out of game threads where he is not playing

So many didn't get that... I liked RJ and do like him, however his style of basketball is not conducive to winning at this level. He does some things well, other things not so well but @ that contract, he should be a legit 3rd option at the least

It will be difficult to grade this deal until we sign OG to an extension.

Right now, it does look like we got fleeced because Raptors got the 2 for 1 special. Quickly and RJ have more potential than OG. We know what OG is and that is a role player.

I would have preferred to keep Quickly and dump RJ. But I suppose Knicks didn't see a reason to extend Quickly for big money. He'll likely get a bigger contract than RJ.

I don't believe in RJ. But I think we could have done a better job selling the dream that he has potential (aka, should have traded him sooner). We waited too long and had to give up Quickly in the process.

At least we dumped RJ horrible contract though. And we don't have to worry about giving Quickly big money. But we will have to cross that same road with OG.

That’s why you got to play the game. The Lakers did it well last year and got Austin Reeves on a criminally low contract.

I don't understand the fleecing talk. We got the best player in the deal. Both the best player and the second best player in the deal are due for an extension. OG also fits seamlessly into the starting lineup.

OG is a good fit for sure. But he's still just a role player.

But is him resigning with the Knicks set in stone? What will his contract be worth? I'm reading that he wants 40 a year.

Respectfully this gets thrown around way too much and just feels lazy. Grimes, DDV, J Hart at least to me are role players. When we played Miami last playoff Caleb Martin was hurting us as a role player. When we just lost to Indiana Nembhard hurt us as a role player. The list is essentially endless as you can identify those kinds of guys on every team in the league.

People get way too caught up in “can player X create off the dribble” and can they easily “get you a bucket when it matters.” If they don’t check those boxes they automatically get filed under “must be a role player.”

Feels like a slight to OG for this reason: How many guys can you find that will pour in 16PPG and 6 Rebounds, while getting 3+ deflections, over 1.5 steals, legitimately guard 1-5 (he spent 25% on PF/SF last year, 20% on PG/SG and 10% on C). Not to mention have a 59% TS the last 3 seasons, hit threes at a 39% clip and blend into an offense by cutting back door as to not take away from our primary ball handlers.

OG is probably one of the better 2 way players the league has to offer he just impacts the game without eye popping, popcorn style creativity.

What we've said all along.

- There is likely a divergence of opinion among FOs about his value.

- A number of FOs probably view him as a negative asset (a kind word compared to "toxic") that would require draft assets to get rid of.

I never understood the pushback against those two assessments tbh.

I'm just relieved that we managed to get rid of the contract without trading away any first-round pick. I hope he restores his value in Toronto so he gets to stay home, but like you do I could easily see them dumping the contract quite rapidly if he doesn't show sustained progress over there.

I like this trade for the Knicks. Now the roster reflects elements that have given the Knicks success in the past. OG, Randle, and Brunson fit right in with the kinds of players the Knicks had during the late 80's to mid 90's. I see the vision.

if he continues to play the way he did here, i think it would be wise to get out of the contract sooner rather than later. the people who still value him do so not based on what he is but what he might be. and with each passing year there's less of those people. he's still got 3 years at a lot of money.
