I agree with ya'll that giving up assets to dump salaries with no guarantee of using that new cap space wisely would be foolish (tbh I don't trust Mills with cap space without a plan like that) So, full disclaimer, I would only do the following if we received any sort of hint from a max FAs camp that we had a legitimate shot, otherwise its just not worth the risk
1. If at all possible, flip/milk out any combo of Mudiay, Kanter, Hezonja, Burke for 2nds (thats okay if this step doesn't happen, but its worth a shot)
2. Trade Lee + Vonleh for expirings from possibly Philly, Indiana or Sacrmaneto (I love Vonleh but he won't be worth resigning for what he will be commanding esp since we don't have his bird rights).
3. Trade THJ + Frank for expirings possibly from the teams above, or maybe a team like the Pelicans (I'm also a Frank supporter and wouldn't just trade him so quickly like this because I feel like the potential is still there but the opportunity to dump 23 mil if we have a good idea a superstar would be coming is hard to give up).
*I would be willing to add 2nds as sweeteners if need be to each of the deals above, esp if Step 1 occurs*
4. Draft RJ Barrett #3 pick (we can possibly drop down to #6 in which case we get more cap space but lets just make this assumption).
4. Waive Lance Thomas so he is only guaranteed 1 mil.
5. Accept player options on Dotson and Trier.
6. Renounce all cap holds on all expirings besides Porzingis.
Salary Situation:
Kristaps Porzingis (cap hold): $17,091,162
RJ Barrett: $6,560,640
Joakim Noah (stretched): $6,431,667
Kevin Knox: $4,380,120
Alonzo Trier: $3,551,100
Damyean Dotson: $1,618,520
Michell Robinson $1,559,712
Lance Thomas (guaranteed money): $1,000,000
Empty Roster Spot Cap Holds (x4): $3,262,460
Total: $45,455,381
Projected Salary Cap: $109,000,000
Projected Cap Space: $63,544,619
7. Sign one of ~7 max-worthy players players. Let's say Kyrie Irving due to his youth/window/hometown connections. His max would start at $32.7mil (since he's been in the league 8 years he can get up to 30% of the salary cap)
8. Stars attract other stars. A player like Kawhi Leonard (or any of the other max-worthy players) might then feel compelled to join to create a superteam. Similar to Kyrie, his contract would start at $32.7 mil.
9. Round out the bench by going over the cap using the "cap space MLE" which is around $5mil and Bi-Annual Exception around $3.5 mil. There's bound to be solid rotational players willing to take a paycut for a team like this. If not, theres always gems to be had for cheap when free agency money is running dry (we see this happen every year). 3rd string can easily be filled with ring-chasing vet mins.
Starters:
PG: Kyrie Irving
SG: RJ Barrett
SF: Kawhi Leonard
PF: Kevin Knox
C: Kristaps Porzingis
Bench:
PG: Bi-Annual Exception
SG: Alonzo Trier
SF: Damyean Dotson
PF: Mid-Level Exception
C: Mitchell Robinson
Again, I understand this is more of a pipe dream but I just posted this in order to outline the type of flexibility that is possible this summer if we play our cards right.
Obviously Kawhi and Kyrie are best case scenarios (more realistically I see Kawhi going to LAC and Kyrie staying) but there are plenty of other good FAs out there this year (Kemba, Klay, Butler, Tobias, Durant lol, Middleton). Also, even if were JUST able to do the Courtney Lee trade that gives us enough money to sign any one max free agent + maybe resign Vonleh and then we can always just trade THJ (who would then be on a shorter deal) with some assets attached (Frank, Trier, Dotson, Robinson, 2nds, lottery protected 1sts) for another perennial all-star type player. Please let me know if any of this math is wrong!
