There isn't a wall street analyst that would deny that MSG stock rose 16% in February primary due to the impact of Lin.

That is not to say the impact was rational, and based on solid investing principles. But it happened. The sharpest rises were immediately following his signature wins.

He is also uniformly credited by communications analysts as being the major factor of why MSG and Time Warner cable settled what then was a months long dispute.

Correlation does not equal causation is a sound, indisputable principle, but in this particular case, there was causation. If one one cares whether they're actually right or wrong on this topic, I'd suggest they research the matter and try to find even one more informed party that disputes this.

As powerful as Dolan is, NO CEO of a publicly traded company isn't held accountable to the price movements of corporate shares.

As of today, MSG's stock price is at $36.59. Trading begins early Monday morning and ends by mid-afternoon. If MSG's value drops by at least 5% on Monday, we can probably assume that Dolan and corporate heads at MSG are going to reconsider dropping Lin.

So then by your logic everybody on the boards should start shorting the stock? :-D

I predict MSG stock will NOT decrease by 5% today! NO way!

And I also agree with suicidedeuce that the MSG stock price increase during Linsanity was indeed singularly caused by Jeremy Lin. Lin IS responsible for the share price increase.

Further, will MSG stock decrease substantially if Dolan doesn't match? YES!
Tanking again, I suppose. Is there any other way?

"Inevitable??" No, it is by NO means inevitable. Possible? Yes, but certainly not inevitable. Further, it's not even certain that the deadline to match is Tuesday. There has been some talk that the official date of delivery must be a working day, meaning possibly today, and that delivery must be in NYC, not Vegas. IF so, then the deadline is three days from today.

That I do agree with. IF the stock price drops precipitously today and tomorrow on the fear that Lin is leaving, then yes, that could influence Dolan's decision to swallow his pride and protect the stock price. As CEO, that is one of his more important responsibilities.

BUT, sadly, if he feels that the huge Lux tax down the road would hurt the stock price in future years, that might also influence him.

Me? I think Dolan would be a fool not to match. He has three years to worry about the tax. Lin could be traded by then.

If Dolan does NOT match he has pissed away an extremely valuable asset for nothing at all. NOT wise!

My best guess: Dolan WILL match. He's taking every available minute and waiting till the very last second just to punish Houston. Houston is suffering because their roster is in a state of disarray.

To the extent a stock drop is to occur as a result of this news, it should certainly start today and not just when Lin is unmatched. The risk of him leaving--which is fairly great--should be incorporated into the share price.

Well actually the stock price had already decreased. Take a look at the chart. It has been steadily down since early July. But yeah, less than wonderful news over this past weekend could affect the price today.

Probably won't see a huge movement in price or volume until after it's official that Lin won't get matched. Then I expect the stock to take a hit.

lol MSG stock starting to tank. S&P down .20%, MSG down 2.6%, and the stock's beta is only .70.

Down more then 2.50% right now at the open. Very big decline for a day with no financial news on the company stock.

"Correlation does not equal causation."

Sound principle.

"Correlation does not necessarily equal causation"

Sounder principle.

"MSG stock big drop after the open bell having nothing to do with Lin"?

A very strong belief in incredible coincedence.

Unless you guys are daytraders, that 3% means nothing 30 minutes into the day.

What?!?

Please.

That's a huge drop in such a short period of time.

Hilarious. I hope it falls 10%. Dolan is a complete ass. I was wrong to defend him and it's shameful that people are still defending him.

Exactly! The price has already begun recovering. And even down around 3% at the Open means virtually nothing. Doomsayers are overreacting here big-time!

And it just went back up 1.5%
