he's 100% running the draft...which is what people thought was the main reason Rose kept Perry around.

So basically sounds like Perry is going to be answering phone calls in terms of trades...but he has zero say especially now that we have a draft specialist and a cap specialist for trade scenarios...and a POBO for final say.

There is no way I can be upset about this. Huge hire imo. 2 legit NBA guys are in so far.

Deeeez Knicks wrote:He sounds well respected and well liked among Jazz fans

The Utah Jazz lost another person in their organization today, not to injury, but to the New York Knicks. Walt Perrin, Utah’s VP of Player Personnel, is set to become the Knicks new Assistant General Manager under Leon Rose according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Leon Rose who was previously a player agent—and more specifically, Mike Conley’s agent—is building quite the treasure trove of organization talent in New York.

Walt Perrin has been responsible for helping the Jazz scout and identify sleeper talent like Rudy Gobert, Paul Millsap, Royce O’Neale, Wes Matthews and Joe Ingles. He’s also helped the Jazz scout players like Donovan Mitchell and Deron Williams. There are always going to be the ones that got away when it comes to the NBA Draft, but a lot of people in Perrin’s line of work would give up a lot to have the type of success Perrin has had in landing top tier talent outside of the Top 10 in the the NBA Draft and in the second round.

Back in March, Justin Zanik had been interviewing for the VP of Basketball Operations job in Chicago and now it appears others in the Utah Jazz organization have been on opposing NBA team’s shortlists for hiring. Is there something going on behind the scenes that we’re not seeing hastening Utah front office executives to look for greener pastures or is this talent poaching just a byproduct of Utah’s past success?

Good luck to Walt Perrin. He did a great job in Utah and will be missed.

Doesn't mean that's the case. It looks like a lot of teams are expected to lose money because of the pandemic, so who knows what the situation in Utah is going to be. If players salary is seeing a cut then certainly front office guys are going to feel the effects of it too. Perrin might have left simply because the money was on the table for him. With Perry's uncertain future there does seem to be an opportunity there but these guys worked together before and now there are a lot of guys with specific roles to play so I don't think Perrin was brought in to do anything more than what he's specialized in over the years. Rose is assembling a team with guys who are respectable for specific roles, like cap management, player scouting, not sure what Scott Perry specialized in maybe its staying on top of phone calls  but ultimately this is how most teams run an organization.

So far Rose seems to be doing the right things and not putting more on one person than they are qualified to do

That is kind of what I'm saying. Perry is not in charge of the vision anymore. That's Rose and Aller. He's not in charge of the draft anymore. That's Perrin.

He's kind of just doing the legwork on these things..which is what an Assistant GM does.

Impossible to say how it will all work out, but I like it so far. Slowly, but methodically building the front office. Rose seems like he is definitely doing his homework with handpicking a staff.

Video of Perrin talking about drafting Donovan Mitchell and also 2018 draft prospects.

I'm not letting them fool me this time. I'll reserve my judgement after i see what happens with this team the next couple of offseasons. I like that we're getting people that have been in their positions for a while and are respected around the league but i remember everyone being excited when we brought S.Perry in as well.

How old is the guy? He looks like he's definitely in his mid to late 60's.

Leon Rose knows people that's for sure and I know money is a factor but he does seem to have the trust of a lot of guys and it's good to see other front office personnel wanting to come work for him.

Lets see if we get a head coach next before the draft. Now I'm curious to see which direction he takes there

I'd like to hope Scott Perry is being kept around for a bit of continuity, and continuity leading up to the draft, but once Perrin and the capologist dude get settled in, Perry gets the boot. Or, more likely, just isn't rehired at the end of his deal, which is in one year, correct? I don't mind Scott Perry cashing Dolan's checks for a year if he has VERY reduced say so.

sounds like they just did him a solid during this COVID in terms of him having too look for another job when he is a vet around the league. Sounds like its we will let you land softly on your feet and you can start looking for other jobs when this pandemic is over.'

But he is not in charge of anything after this.
