2022-23 BaF Preseason Power Rankings

TEAM----------------- (HIGHEST RANKING/LOWEST RANKING)

1. San Antonio Spurs (1/5)
What other GM's are saying about San Antonio:

"Defending champs still have the best duo although the loss of Bridges will have an effect, they still made solid moves in the offseason to remain at the top of the league and in serious contention for the title again."

"Jokic and Steph remain the deadliest 1-2 punch in the league. Bane/MPJ/Seth Curry are going to feast from 3 all season long. Defense may be below average but I don't think it will matter."

"Two top 5 players what else can you say? Well they have a 3rd star and incredible squad chemistry on paper which could rival or may be even better than real life Golden State. And they have more assets to get stronger. Retaining Curry in free agency was the key for this team who is probably having the best season of his career"

2. Charlotte Hornets (1/12)
What other GM's are saying about Charlotte:

"Ja + KD + Edwards + Rozier is going to be the top scoring quartet in the league and Pat Bev + Thybulle + Horford + Edwards will be a top 3 defensive core. Depth is less than some other teams, but the core group is the best."

"Hoffa was always a good GM. Always improving. This year he proved to be a great one. He strategically built a powerhouse and put on an absolute clinic. This team is a clear cut contender."

"Durant, Morant and Edwards are as dynamic as they come in terms of a 1-2-3 punch. Scoring won't be a problem at all, it's whether or not Zubac/Thybulle can help you win it all?"

3. Cleveland Cavaliers (1/13)
What other GM's are saying about Cleveland:

"The reset wasn’t kind to them as they were too loaded to keep everyone under the cap. Still, even with the losses, Tatum and company are one of the best teams in the league. However, there is now a clear gap between them and Charlotte."

"Guard positions look weak, but the forward and center position is elite and deep."

"Still have Tatum and still have that elite defense with Bam/Ayton front court. Guard play knocks them down a peg or two but they are still a threat in the east."

4. Los Angeles Clippers (1/13)
What other GM's are saying about the Clippers:

"Extremely deep team led by SGA/Brown and Gobert won’t be a fun arena to play in for the opposing team"

"Defense is ridiculous in this team. Brown and Gobert easily make this a PO team - now throw in SGA emerging as an eas All-Star, along with some strong supporting players. Another western contending team."

"The trio of SGA, Brown and Gobert is as interesting as they come. This could be the year the Clippers really announce to the West they're here to make noise.

5. Golden State Warriors (3/18)
What other GM's are saying about Golden State:

"Chris Paul, Julius Randle and embiid actually make sense together and the depth is there I don’t mind putting this team in the top 10. New era always has tricks up his sleeve"

"Well to start New Era is a god with finding trades to improve his team and team fit. On top of that Embiid is probably the best player in the sim when healthy and CP3, Gary Trent, Julius, and Barnes give them a lot of scoring options if he isn't content in letting Embiid score 30+ a night. The defense is the biggest issue with this squad."

"This team could have ranked higher and be more of a threat to the top dogs if CP3 was younger. Embiid and a pretty solid supporting cast, with emerging talents in Trent - Jaden McDaniels - Alvarado and a vigilante bench of Fournier - Randle makes this team one of the best of the remaining rest"

6. Portland Trailblazers (2/15)
What other GM's are saying about Portland:

"On the surface, the Blazers look like a nursing home filled with has-beens, but when you truly observe the build it’s a really strong team with the potential to dominate their opponent barring injuries. They’ll be gritty for sure. Smash knows how to win, but can he do what has never been done and win with Bron?"

"This team lost a lot of key pieces in the offseason and there are question marks with how the new pieces will all fit. Still a lot of talent to not have them in the middle of the pack."

"Like a modern late 90s Jazz team. Clear contender."

7. Dallas Mavericks (2/16)
What other GM's are saying about Dallas:

"Give the Greek Freak an upgrade at point guard over Lowry so he can compete with the Jokic/Curry and Durant/Morant duos and the Mavs might hoist a second BAF trophy. As is, they need to settle for a top 4 seed in the west."

"Giannis surrounded by shooters is a great start. A bit of a drop off in talent after Greek Freak; having Giannis makes him a contending team. Solid vets that are team first oriented."

"Was able to retain the best player in the league and surround him with elite 3pt shooting."

8. Chicago Bulls (1/14)
What other GM's are saying about Chicago:

"Kawhi and McCollum need more help but they are right in the logjam of teams fighting for home court in the opening round of the playoffs."

"Isaac and Kawhi should both come in at 90+ on defense. Offensively CJ, Kawhi, and Conley gives them one of the best scoring trios in the league. The biggest issue here is IDK how they build going forward. The Hornets are basically a better version of this team and she's in probably the best division in the conference, arguably the best in the league (I've already named 3 teams from the conference here), so whatever HerSports is planning she won't have much time to test things out."

"Year in and year out, you can count on Chicago being a tough out in the playoffs. The depth is getting a little shorter, real life injuries to Wall, Leonard, Issac make you wonder if sim will catch up."

9. Denver Nuggets (2/16)
What other GM's are saying about Denver:

"Love what they did to the roster. Great floor spacing and scoring mixed around scrappy defenders"

"Sleeper contender in my opinion. If guys like Huerter, Payton, Looney, McDermott get strong ratings, they can make some noise."

" If we’re looking at talent, this is a very offensive-minded team. A few strong defensive players. Could be a top 4-6 in the west, depending on some ratings that might come out."

10. Utah Jazz (5/16)
What other GM's are saying about Utah:

"Honestly I should have placed them higher than this the team is pretty stacked and decently balanced. Harden, Zion and porzingis is a very solid trio to building forward with and the depth is looking really good."

"Lots of offensive firepower and depth on this team. Defensively there are questions marks. Should still have a good season due to depth."

"This is probably my sleeper team right here. Possible erosion of Harden's scoring talents may be mitigated here by Zion, and other weapons like KP and Buddy Hield who are off to flying starts in real life. Hot start to the season and the balance of the squad earns them a top 10 ranking and the dark horse team title"

11. Orlando Magic (5/18)
What other GM's are saying about Orlando:

"Roster doesn't look as strong as some teams, but I think will surprise"

"This team reminds me of a sandwich. Two great slices of bread in AD and Murray, but just grabbed whatever they could find and slapped it in the middle. GM has a gift for finding young diamonds in the rough, but AD and Murray want to win now."

"Needs a move or two to balance the roster (so many bigs) but once they do will field a very strong squad."

12. New Orleans Pelicans (6/20)
What other GM's are saying about New Orleans:

"Doncic/Ingram are elite offensive weapons but not sure they have the depth to make enough noise out west."

"Dominant front two but depth may be a year from maturity."

"Pooch built a squad with 3 solid passers that are mediocre when it comes to efficiency, but he has Moses inside to take advantage of it all. This team will dominate the boards, but the efficiency will be horrible and without monster production from Moses things can go south really fast if Pooch let's it."

13. Toronto Raptors (9/20)
What other GM's are saying about the Toronto:

"Some questionable moves during free agency. Team lacks direction, but 2010 knows how to adjust. He’ll cause this team to sneak out some wins until trades can be made."

"Lack of quality depth, but will still be a playoff team in the East."

"Lack of interior presence and decline of Klay keeps this team from reaching higher in rankings. Miles Bridges is not factored in this more real life based ranking. They will likely be dependent on Dame going supernova but they have some nice defensive pieces in Brogdon - Trey Murphy - Bol Bol which makes them rank higher than some of the teams below that could have more talent"

14. Oklahoma City Thunder (5/23)
What other GM's are saying about Oklahoma City:

"Great free agency. Poaching Derozan and Jafro and dodging the bullet that is the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of Ben Simmons contract."

"I don’t feel it’s a real contender but it should be good for the regular season. Might need to make a trade for more shooters but good team for sure I think sim will still respect it."

" I wanna see him get humbled, but he has a solid team  "

15. Sacramento Kings (11/24)
What other GM's are saying about Sacramento:

"Strong trio with Hoilday/Beal/MIddelton but lack the front court depth to be a true contender."

"Man this team depresses me, a collection of second tier stars looking for their alpha. Lot of talent no doubt but lack of hierarchy keeps their rating lower than what is likely should be higher. Regular season hero Bradley Beal is the answer for a team that kept failing to get over the hump in playoffs? And how do you bring the entire Bucks crew and leave out Brook who is having a career resurgence? Sorry for the negative outlook but Kuzma might be the steal of the off season and might end up being the guy they need to step up (Edit: Aaaand just checked the rosters and they dont have Kuzma)"

"This GM churns out strong roster after strong roster."

16. Miami Heat (9/23)
What other GM's are saying about Miami:

"Interesting team. I may be underrating them depending on how there young talent is treated in the SIM."

"This is a real sign of how well distributed the talent is in BAF this season. In past seasons, a team with Paul George, Clint Capela, and John Collins would be fighting for home court in the first round. This year (especially if Capela and Collins and downgraded to 3 stars like I predict), it is not enough to even guarantee a playoff spot."

"Lots of good guys but I'm not in love with the fit of their main guys. I think they need some shooters to really shine."

17. Milwaukee Bucks (15/26)
What other GM's are saying about Milwaukee:

"Tough veteran team that just finds itself in the wrong division. It will contend for a play in spot, however this rough division will make the losses stack up."

"Solid and deep team but doesn't have the star power to really contend."

"A lot of weird fitting parts on this team. I don't see a direction. Don't expect them to be good this year but they have enough pieces to not be terrible."

18. Atlanta Hawks (18/26)
What other GM's are saying about Atlanta:

"Some solid players, but no one that turns them into a playoff team. Pool’s contract is orgasmic."

"Don’t see a vision. Simmons' contract is looking very bad. Team may need to attach a FRP to get rid of him which might be the only path to building something with Myles. Ribs is active though and opportunities will always find active GMs."

"Simmons and Turner will give this team an elite defense. Gallinari possibly having to start at SF insures this team will not make it too far. The squad is kind of empty and it's built around Simmons but of course you have to deal with the downside of Sim Simmons which is that he will always be in foul trouble and while he is in file trouble outside of Poole what do you have going for your offense?"

19. Boston Celtics (21/28)
What other GM's are saying about Boston:

"Monster draft. Cohesive squad that can sneak up and steal games. Still a few years off."

"Drafting Chet and adding D’Angelo and OG should make this team alot more competitive. I don’t know if they’re tanking again but on paper it’s not bad at all if they plan on being competitive. Still has tons of draft assets to control his future"

"Still mostly young players. Lots and lots of promise, with young core players. A few years away."

20. Philadelphia 76ers (20/28)
What other GM's are saying about Philadelphia:

"They tore it down and hit the reset button. Those guards will still keep them somewhat competitive but they won't be as good as in the past."

"ezmoney finally hit the rebuild button after running circles around sim over the years with minimal rotation management and they already collected plenty of young exciting talent. They appear to be missing that guy which could make a perfect match with who-he-must-not-be-nbamed"

"Really strong trio of young guards in Maxey/Simons/Sexton but need to figure out the situation in the front court."

21. Memphis Grizzlies (28/29)
What other GM's are saying about Memphis:

"All in on asset collection mode at the expense of their cap, the next few years in Memphis will be dark and gloomy."

"Is this even an NBA team? This is a GLeague roster with no foundation pieces or building blocks. They will be very bad this year but probably by design."

"Bad News – They are the easily the worst team in BAF and it’s not even close. Good News – The bad news is not their fault but lies soley with previous ownership. Also, the bad news brings with it the most ping pong balls in the lottery and they own their own pick."
