From the outside looking in, it appears it was an MSG Networks decision to hire him. That is an entirely separate entity, not operated by the Knicks front office.
Leon Rose deciding to keep Mark Jackson away from the team (chartered flights, hotels, bus, etc.) indicates they did not want him around the team, potentially interacting with the players (perhaps fears of potential attempts to undermine the coaching staff).
I’m sure background checks dug up the Jackson / Erman workplace history but maybe being banned from the team, or having to fly on commercial flights, staying at separate hotels ended up being a deal-breaker for Jackson.
