Maybe he'll start taking somewhat contested layups again

Before the complainers jump in here, remember how many times he saved our asses in the playoffs. I expect him to play better under a coach that he actually likes.

Glad they got that out of the way. I doubt they were going to let him get to unrestricted free agency after trading all those picks for him. As far as how much he is making i'm not sure how much it matters as the Knicks are likely to be operating over the cap for the next 3-4 years. Mikal locked himself in at the 4th highest salary per year behind KAT, OG, and Brunson so i'm hoping for at least the 4th highest positive impact from him this year.

He single handedly got Thibs fired, so let's hope so

I don't know how much flexibility it gives us. It looks like we're making a beeline towards the second apron, discount notwithstanding.

He seems like a guy where a coaching change could make the biggest difference. He just felt a little out of rhythm with the team last year.

 I guess that would be the other way to put it. OG too, apparently.

TBH my only beef with Mikal is his broken 3pt shot. If he can figure that out this summer he’s an excellent 2 way piece for an uptempo Mike Brown system. His off ball movement is the best on the team by far, and he consistently runs hard in transition.

Let's go! Most optimistic I've been since the year Jordan left.

And this team is WAAAY more complete than that team was.

Interesting to see that he is making $9-10M less per year than OG over the next 3 seasons. What would Mikal's max contract be if he waited until next off-season to sign?

I'm not a huge fan of Mikal but we need him if we want to go where we want to go. He took a little less and puts us in a decent situation with the 2nd apron so nothing to complain about. Giannis was a pipe dream and it at least kills any possibility of LeBum!

seeing this they are probably trying to extend Mitch around 15 MM per. That would give them a little wiggle under the 2nd apron.

Damn was hoping we would wait for giannis.

At least he took some sort of discount. But it's still a massive bag we gave him. He needs to fix his 3 point shot. That broken shot is on him, no one else. 33% from 3 in the playoffs is unacceptable. And passing up layups for contested middies. He has quite the work to do to live up to his contract.

Think he would have gotten traded if he didn’t accept this offer.

I don't know. Looking at that chart it seems like the Knicks would be $18.6M under the 2nd apron for just 8 players not including Dadiet's team option or their possible 2026 1st round pick. If the Knicks want to continue to operate under the 2nd apron next year Mitch might need to sign at closer to $10M or less in the first year of his contract so they can be able to fill out the rest of the roster. Even then players 9-14,15 may all be vet mins/rookie vet mins.

I wonder if they would entertain trading Mitch for a cheaper more reliable replacement if they can't come to an agreement this year or if they are willing to go over the 2nd apron next year.
