That's all you get from it?

Important question: did you get to college before or after "School Daze"?

After. My best friend pledged. Almost everyone around me at the time did. They toted the company line of employment connections, networking, community service...yada, yada, yada but lets be forreal. Most really do it for the following reasons:

A) Family member trend
B) Campus clout
C) Chicks
D) Wanting to be "down" for a feeling of "belonging"
E) Parties and frat-house lifestyle

Iono, maybe it's just a regional thing. Where I'm from heads are not big on that type of thing at all. It's a sign of weakness. Maybe that's just embedded in my mentality.

Do y'all tho...

It's not about trying to be down...in my sense it is a bond and means to network that I seen utilized and leveraged from my grand-ucnles, uncles, and cousins. I first hand saw sh*t get done and people looked out for just because they shared the "bond". Of course you have cats that go into it for the wrong reasons, but you have that with EVERY group of influence. True members with true hearts serve the frat and its endeavors. Cats that pledge only to get chicks and to party are weeded out when it comes down to service and respect. Well, that's how it used to be when I first went to college 20 years ago.

Aside from that, what exactly is wrong with trying to be "down"? If we're talking about positivity, and orgs. that have been around since the turn of the past century, shepherding the advancement of blacks, the whole world through.

It's a new century and in some aspects the organizations have lost some of their "umph". A lot of that leads to less leadership training on college campuses, with less "rights of passage", and fortified bonds to take you throughout your life.

I would say, save 5 close friends from my neighbordhood growing up, most of the rest are those brothers I pledged with and others I met through the various functions, dating back 20+ years.

To each his own...but let's not dimish the value of brotherhood (and sisterhood).

^It's bigger in the South (def.) but the NorthEast actually has a great tradition, esp. in schools like Cornell, Columbia, etc...

Again, it's cool -- it's just not your thing!

hmm, Emeka Okafor tried to get with my girl at UConn, and when my girls room-mate told her that she was taken, Okafor was like "so, I don't care!" Honestly, I wasn't even mad when I found out, I thought it was kinda cool that a future NBA player was trying to get with my girl.
