By the way, FVV would have been great. I don’t think we had a shot but his contract is a relative bargain

By filling his rosters with mediocre “win now” vets, Dolan ironically chose mediocre lotto picks (Frank, Knox, and Obi) over a chance at better prospects.
I’m not saying something controversial or even ambiguously incorrect. It happened and it is what it is.
The only year we were allowed to take our foot off the gas for a top pick was the Zion year when Dolan was fold KD was coming anyway. Every other year, we were f*cked.
Mike Miller was (rightfully) scared for his job and has no incentive to tank for Lamelo or Edwards. Also no incentive to get quality minutes to develop role playing lotto picks.
Anyway, many Knick fans choose to pretend this didn’t happen and carry on complaining about Donovan Mitchell. Is what it is (which is moronic).
Can you even blame Dolan when the response of being .500 has the fan base happy as a pig in slop and them delusionally thinking we can go on a long playoff run with this current roster.
Then in 5 years everyone will be complaining about “Why did we win all those worthless games right before the best draft in almost 20 years?”
Yes.
Absolutely, yes I can.
As a paying customer and longtime ticket holder I can tell you that fans would have accepted a marketing narrative of patience— that we’re rebuilding.
Instead, when Dolan got embarrassed by KD/Kyrie he went out and spent all this money on Portis and co. with the explicit media narrative of “this is a Playoff team.”
So yes, I blame Dolan for setting that stupid delusional butt-hurt narrative. I personally yelled “sell the team” within ear shot of Dolan, and i can tell you I wasn’t angry because we were losing—I was angry because how outrageously terribly he runs things, including the fact that our starting lineup wasn’t Randle + 4 rookies/sophs when it had become abundantly clear to everyone that we were nowhere near a playoff spot.
Instead I’m sitting there watching Mo Harkless for what exactly? So we can beat the Hawks on a random Tuesday late in the season? So we can high five each other over $20 beers and then draft Obi instead of Lamelo?
Yeah, I blame Dolan.
Dolan is trash, but if you read these threads you can see the anger people get when you say be patient and we’re the informed consumers.
Last year was a bad year for a lot of reasons and I do think the plan was the play the youth and tank but you know COVID-19.
I am more annoyed by this year where Thibs rides the rentals for heavy minutes to squeeze out a win when it’s clear this is the last year “tanking” would even be an option.

Nobody wants to come and be a savior. The Knicks can actually be a factor in FA because players can see what the roster is and surmise where they can fit to get wins. Randle deserves MIP, and on the low RJ is a candidate for that award too.

See this year I kinda respect Dolan for how all-in he is on this idiotic plan of trying to look good *now* at all costs.
Thibs is a machine. And Dolan got very lucky with Randle, RJ, Quickley, and Mitch. I’m optimistic he’ll get this squad into the Pandemic playoffs, or at least a play-in game.
Obviously they’re hoping that an improved reputation + CAA/Kentucky will be enough to recruit A-list vets from other teams this offseason.
Dolan DGAF about our 2 FRPs except as ammunition to land a marquee veteran. That’s why he hired Leon.To trade youth/picks for established stars. And that’s why Leon hired Thibs: to “win now” enough to make NY attractive to veterans again.
Of course these are veterans we could have drafted ourselves had we had even one shred of intelligence 4-5 years ago, but that ship has sailed.
Why draft Lamelo when you can buy his big brother 4 years later?

I still am hoping we get a late lottery pick. This is looking like a 14 man draft and Knicks are clawing there way to 8th seed. The main reason they even do this trade is the hope it’ll solidify their 6th seed dreams.

Knicks can probably get Ball's Birds for cheap by taking on that extra salary. Good call.

I wonder if the Knicks can somehow route philly's pick to NO and offer both teams cap relief.

His Bird Rights are the entire reason you make a move for him now. It's very valuable if you are interested in him as a player.

That's too much money to spend on guys who aren't all-stars because both would require overpays for us to get, so you have to pick one or the other IMO.
How about Lonzo and Powell?
Lonzo and Trent/Powell would be a dream offseason for me. and yes, I know Trent is in a slump right now.

What's the trade for Lonzo? Be realistic too, as bad as Obi has been they aren't throwing him or IQ into any trades for non-stars. I think the Mavericks pick is losing steam, they are obviously going to make the playoffs barring a catastrophic injury to Luka, and a pick in the 20s may not address our glaring need for a PG. There are no FA PGs outside of Lonzo for the foreseeable future, so I think if we do make a trade for Lonzo it starts with the Mavs pick.

Why are we giving a first round pick for a highly flawed point guard who will be a restricted free agent in couple of months?
