GONYK wrote:The Athletic article that came out about the Jets is pretty wild. Some noteworthy excerpts:

The New York Jets’ owner was at his house in Palm Beach, Fla., last February, discussing potential offseason acquisitions with team decision-makers as they watched game tape. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, a former Denver Broncos first-round pick, flashed on the screen. Jets general manager Joe Douglas expressed interest, according to someone familiar with the meeting. Johnson took out his phone and started typing.

A few weeks later, Douglas and his Broncos counterpart, George Paton, were deep in negotiations for a trade that would have sent Jeudy to the Jets and given future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers another potential playmaker. The Broncos felt a deal was near. Then, abruptly, it all fell apart. In Denver’s executive offices, they couldn’t believe the reason why.

Douglas told the Broncos that Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in “Madden NFL,” the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources. The Broncos ultimately traded the receiver to the Cleveland Browns. Last Sunday, Jeudy crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career.

Last year, Johnson started including his sons in some meetings at the team facility. For some Jets employees, the sons’ increasing involvement clarified their father’s propensity for sharing posts from X and articles from various outlets, including a blog called “Jets X-Factor,” with the organization’s top decision-makers.

“When we’re discussing things, you’ll hear Woody cite something that Brick or Jack read online that’s being weighed equally against whatever opinion someone else in the department has,” said one Jets executive.

“I answer to a teenager,” Douglas quipped to people close to him before the season in an acknowledgment of the perceived power dynamic.

Johnson’s reference to Jeudy’s “Madden” rating was, to some in the Jets’ organization, a sign of Brick and Jack’s influence. Another example came when Johnson pushed back on signing free-agent guard John Simpson due to a lackluster “awareness” rating in Madden. The Jets signed Simpson anyway, and he has had a solid season: Pro Football Focus currently has him graded as the eighth-best guard in the NFL.

This year, on Halloween night, the Jets registered their first victory since Saleh’s firing four weeks earlier. It was a significant moment for a struggling team. Rodgers walked into an energized locker room with a game ball in hand, and it was expected that he’d give the ball to Ulbrich, a customary gesture when a coach gets his first NFL win.

But before Rodgers could speak, Brick Johnson took another game ball and awarded it to wide receiver Garrett Wilson in a profanity-laced exclamation, which the owner’s son later posted to Instagram. Woody Johnson then gave Ulbrich the ball Rodgers had been holding. Multiple players said the energy felt drained out of the room.

“It was the most awkward, cringe-worthy, brutal experience,” one player said.

In addition to firing the head coach and general manager and suggesting the benching of the star quarterback, Johnson has pursued cuts across the Jets organization.

This offseason, he forced Saleh to fire five coaches and wouldn’t allow Douglas to replace former assistant GM Rex Hogan (who Johnson forced Douglas to fire in January). “The open role was used to re-organize the staff,” the team spokesperson said. “The notion that he didn’t want that position replaced is untrue. The responsibilities were filled by employees who deserved promotions.”

The Jets didn’t hire officials for training camp, a standard practice in the NFL, after being the most penalized team in the league in 2023 (they are the third-most penalized team in 2024). They did have officials for two joint practices with the New York Giants and Washington Commanders, respectively.

I literally just gasped when I read the Madden rating part. Oh my GOD.

I don't know how any Jets season ticket can justify renewing after reading this.

If they do renew, they are a sucker.

Like this is so bad I think Johnson should be forced to sell the team.

thats a good and bad thing....good in that we are not down that bad...but bad in that because the Jets are a laughing stock don't want the Giants to go under the radar by the media. We need pressure to get things done with Mara sometimes.

Like if the Jets were in the playoffs which they should be in the convo...all the media attention would be on how bad the Giants are and they wouldn't be able to hide from it.

I feel like now they can have the excuse...well at least we are not the Jets

If only Mara had consulted Madden, maybe Big Blue wouldn’t be in this situation. Jones entered the 2024 season with a 75 overall rating in Madden NFL 24, ranking him 21st among quarterbacks. $40 million for a 75 overall player is insanity.

Jones' ranking was tied with Matthew Stafford and barely ahead of Baker Mayfield. While he's in great company, ranking 21st in positional ratings is not exactly the franchise cornerstone you'd want to break the bank for.”

Can’t say I’m in agreement with a change until I know who’s available for both GM and coach.

Also, this ownership group hasn’t shown the ability to choose good executives yet. We’d be changing just to change. In that situation continuity is better than bringing in the next hot name, which is what we did the last few times.

Daniel Jones was always an ownership decision, even before Schoen was hired. And having bad quarterback play hinders the whole team. The Oline looks worse because of Jones’s holding the ball and indecision. The defense is always playing against an offense with a lead so you can’t generate negative plays and they’re always on the field so they’re tired and the other team ends up with extra possessions and opportunities to score. I’ve said this before: people use bad Oline play to justify Daniel’s struggles for years, but no one uses Daniel’s struggles to justify the struggles of every other player and coach on the team, which is absolutely true. It’s impossible to accurately assess a receiver like Wendale based on Danny’s play. We can’t generate interceptions or sacks because we score 14 points a game.

I say keep Schoen and Daboll. Making a change is less likely to work out than letting them continue move forward with a singular vision. It’s not like there are 7 QBs to choose from anyway.

Yeah, because changing coaches has been so good to us right? I have no faith in Mara and Tisch to pick a new GM and coach. Firing Daboll means they would’ve failed five straight times to find a new coach. Anywho, I think having Daniel Jones as your qb is a sufficient enough handicap.

I won’t be mad if they’re fired; I just don’t see a slam dunk replacement. I really wanted Harbaugh last time.

Good god Lock is ass...let him play the rest of the season.

Never did I ever thought I'd witness 10 losses in a row but here we are. What makes it even more painful is that I was embarrassingly openly rooting against my team. Like I was legit angry when Tracy got that first TD to put us up 7-0. I felt so disgusted with myself but it's the reality of the situation. I'm not a stupid fan. I know losing is what is best for this franchise right now. It just felt so wrong and I cannot wait until this season is over. This has been the worst season for me.

I cannot believe Schoen gave Drew Lock $5M. Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't we have just kept Tyrod Taylor for half of that? It's unbelievable just how terrible of a GM Schoen has been. The wasted picks on Neal, Thibodeaux and Banks should be enough to tell you he's just NOT an NFL GM. I don't know what metrics he uses to draft or build a team but it's clearly not good. And I don't see how it gets better with giving him more time. Fine, he drafts Sanders or Ward and for argument sake, let's say they go on to become NFL All-Pro QBs. What about the rest of the roster? 3 years with 3 drafts and 3 transaction cycles and Schoen has built the worst roster in the entire league! And you want to give him more drafts and transaction cycles hoping it gets better? It won't.

Daboll just stinks. This guy is supposed to be some offensive guru and some QB whisperer and he's garbage. Every game it's the same ****. You can always count on an illegal shift that takes away a big play. That's discipline and coaching. And it hasn't gotten any better. Who exactly has Daboll coached up? What player has gotten better? He's gotta go man. He has no feel for the game, no creativity, his players commit the most stupidest penalties and they are undisciplined and not getting better.

I'm so defeated. What makes it worse is that it does look like Mara is going to keep Schoen and Daboll. We would've heard rumors of replacements by now and we haven't heard a single one. And Sanders or Ward aren't going to make it under this regime. They are doomed to fail.

I'm really worried the Eagles game for us. Eagles had a terrible loss that basically takes them out of the #1 seed and bye week. So once the Eagles clinch the Division vs Cowboys next week most likely. They will probably rest everyone vs us.

That would be so Giants to f*ck up the entire tank on the last week of the season.

Talent wise no...but a team that clinches even the backups are checked out...they basically have a vanilla game plan and guys are trying not to get hurt.
