Nah, who remembers Flies Up?

Who got robbed in Albe Square Mall arcade?

That joint was a battleground.

Who ever saw the Decep's transform on somebody?

Who knows about that honey turkey and cheese on coco bread?

Who bought fake gold from the Colosseum?

Why is a quarter water and a pack of Lindens the best snack?

Why did Golden Crust kill all the good beef patty shops?

Who knew how to sneak into Roy Wilkins Park for the fair?

These are the real questions.

Grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. Roosevelt was the **** back in the day! So many good places to eat and chill. It's a total dump now. So many places closed down.

My father had a chicken joint in the 80's across the street from Willies, corner of 145th and 8th Ave...Harlem Fried Chicken. Used to take the D train with my mom after school to go see dad, hang out till his friend for the night shift came, then come home with him. It was open 24 hours because it was under a burned down building, there was no way to securely close it.

I remember sitting on the front stoop of the store, hanging out with the crack dealer who hung out by the store all the time because it was a prime corner spot, eating ice cream, watching cars go by, he would name every single one of them correctly, and it became a game we played. Then he familiarized me with this thing called hip hop, naming artists and songs blasting through the stereos of cars. He got me my first rap vinyl record, Big Daddy Kane, Ain't no half steppin'...stole it and proudly told me. It made my parents go out and buy a turntable to try it out, an Aiwa. My Pakistani parents heard it and shrugged. I can still smell the chicken competing with burgers in the air ....miss those summers.

It was a Pathmark last time I drove by a few years ago, just out of curiosity to see the neighborhood. There was even a bank!!!

yoooooooo

you all the way in my mind right now.

willie's (pronounced "wooly" for god knows why) was. the. schidt!

and wow. that chicken spot was your fam. that's crazy. yep, supermarket there now. was pathmark, but now it's something else.
i forget.

and popeye's on the diagonal corner. so people can still get chicken at least.

i **** you not... there is a 7-eleven on the corner where willie's was.

Small world, brother...small world.

That Popeyes was what eventually led to my dad shutting down the doors. In the end he had to sell out and go work for the owner, who started off by opening his first one at the 125 BID near Apollo, then opened that one across the street, and now has hundreds of them.

That Popeyes/Baskin Robbins across the street was the first fancy thing on that block to open up, and the first casualty was my dad, now look at Harlem.

My father teamed up with some local black small business owners, the corner store, the hair salon, even had some cash backing from his crack dealer friend. (I asked my dad after making that post if he remembered him...he replied "yeahhh Jimmy..the guy who brought you all your toys!! He still covers for him  ) It was to buy property but were turned down at every door by the Jewish property owners who burned down these buildings for insurance purposes in the first place. The white looking Afghan Popeyes guy didn't want anything to do with black people and had no problems when he walked in with white suits from Popeyes. My dad eventually opened a Blimpie for a little while with the help of his Senegali friend on Lenox Ave but it didn't last long because as soon as they made some money the landlord jacked up the rent.

It's why it hurts me when I don't see powerful black people take control of their neighborhoods and open their own businesses. Black people put food on our table all our lives and my dad was always hurt that when he goes there now the people that lived and worked in bad times have the least to show for it.

Those landlords would rather burn them down than let black people live and work there....now look at it....what you have before you was the master plan. :nonono: "The Bronx is burning" wasn't a mistake.
