If he can facilitate like he did in college do not be surprised if he's on the court with Brunson for some stretches. Jalen does such an incredible job of collapsing defenses and freeing up our shooters, but he has not played next to an elite floor general unless you look back to Luka. While Brunson's game is primarily with the ball in his hands, having another guy on the floor who dissects the opponent with superior distribution skills should open up Brunson's game to play off ball more often.
Not getting ahead of myself, but the FO locked up Kolek for 4 years because they believe he's got the goods. Watching his clips gives me John Stockton vibes.
I'll take a brainiac PG over an athletic freak 8 days a week. This guy is going to raise our hoops IQ.
Brunson has played next to an elite floor general though. Julius Randle.
I was kidding about the elite part but Randle does collapse defenses when he bullies his way to the rim and his playmaking allows Brunson to play off ball more.
About Kolek, I can't wait for him to match up against TJ McConnell.
Both Brunson and Randle play bully ball which collapses defenses and frees up teammates. This ability generates plenty of assist opportunities for both men who are capable passers, though in no way is Randle a facilitator. Brunson is modestly skilled at distribution to be fair, but he can dime in other scenarios when he puts his mind to it.
I do think Brunson is excellent at making reads and deciphering defenses, but because he is through and through a shoot first guard his passing skills will always take a backseat to his prime directive which is to create scoring opportunities for himself.
What Kolek does is a different skill set if he can execute at the same level in the NBA. Kolek is as pure a PG in the classical floor general mode as we've had a chance to see in a Knicks uniform in possibly decades. That's not hyperbole to say he's the greatest since I don't know how well he will do. It is simply the truth the Knicks have had very few elite distributors for decades now.
When the best distributors to play for us in the past three decades are Duhon, Felton and Marbury it is a low bar to clear. After Ward and Childs, then Jackson, Strickland and and Micheal Ray Richardson.
In the history of the Knicks there are not that many pure PGs who were elite floor generals. Clyde is the gold standard. There is a drop-off after him with Richardson being the most talented PG in Knicks history followed by Rod Strickland (whom we foolishly traded). Jackson was a good floor general with strength and a post-up game.
I'm not counting Pablo or Kidd since they were sunsetting their careers on the Knicks.
My point is if Kolek is very good or better, it will be a very rare thing to see a pure PG in a Knicks uniform. I'm pretty excited to see what he can do. Fingers crossed.
