They're idle.

^ I'm going to pretend this is the answer so I can never think about this again.

The answer is the driver was a Real GM Mod and at the 9th block the passenger made their first post ever on the Knicks board using their wifi laptop, whereupon the driver turned around and said:

There are plenty of good riddles that have relatively long answers, such as the one with the three light bulbs and three switches in different rooms. I think mine is pretty close, the only thing that bugs me is the hint, which I haven't found a way to match up yet. I agree about one thing though, a good riddle + answer should make you go "aha" or "ohhhh" and not "huh yeah I guess that sort of fits".

As stated before I say he "dropped a dime" or "stopped on a dime" phrase is the correct answer. As usually the case with riddles like this.

Simple, its one cent per block. He gave the driver a dime so therefore after 10 blocks he was kicked out. It never said he communicated anything to the driver about taking him 13 blocks, it just says he gave the driver a dime to drive him 13 blocks. Just because he wanted to go 13 blocks doesn't mean he could if he only payed for 10.

Simple. Now what do I win?

He was playing the drums on the streetcar so they kicked him out.

Doubt it. It's already been said.

can of peas wrote:Ok I think I got this one figured out. The guy pays for 13 blocks knowing that the streetcar only goes 12 blocks before reversing on its tracks. That way he can try to stay on the trolley telling them that the trolley has never traveled 13 blocks from his destination. The streetcar operators disagree and kick him out because even though it hasn't traveled 13 blocks from his original destination, he has already ridden for a total of 13 blocks when it comes back to the 11th block. When they come back to the 10th block, he has ridden 14 blocks, more than he has paid for, so they kick him out.

The key phrase is that they kick him out "on the 10th block", and not "after 10 blocks". The streetcar has passed the 10th block twice. Streetcars travel back and forth on tracks in a loop, similar to subway cars.

The reason he wants to stay on the streetcar is that he is playing his drums for money, much like we see people playing music in subway stations today and sometimes on the subway cars themselves. If his plan had gone according to plan, he could have ridden the streetcar the whole day, busking for money, since it was physically impossible for the streetcar to travel the 13 blocks from his destination he had paid for. The reason the driver accepted the fare was either because he didn't realize he was only 12 blocks from the streetcar's final stop, or just that he couldn't give change back anyway, since it would have been less than a penny (if it's 10 cents for 13 blocks, that comes out to less than 8/10 of a penny for each block- or about 9.23 cents for 12 blocks).

Slick, i like that. Only part I dont really follow is why the driver would agree to take someone 13 blocks. Driver should know thats not possible imo. And if you see someone coming on board with a drum you should already know whats up and be on edge.

lol I think this thing doesnt have answer though. I think someone was pulling OPs leg to begin with and we all got sucked in.

Also, do you honestly think that someone on their death bed would be handing down such a convoluted answer?

I didn't read the other responses, so pardon me if someone said this already.

I think the answer is that after traveling 13 blocks, the streetcar arrived at the 10th block. That's where he was kicked out. The streetcar fulfilled its end by going 13 blocks, which ended up being the 10th block.

Hmm maybe something to do with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_block . I also think that streetcar driver may be the drummer, which a random person gave him a drum ( which may be a different drum than we thought, like a wooden block? ) and sticks to 'drive' him 13 blocks which may mean playing music in that time :D I think the answer would be totally different than something like this but I wanted to point out that, we should think differently.
