You can't trade for R Jackson. He was one of the worst rotational guards in the NBA last year

Too late that bridge is burned.
We can do whatever we want. I'm not saying that I'd like Melo back for this season, but if I'm Mills, I'm not getting swindled either.
Would the Knicks really want Melo back in camp if the deal collapsed, I don't think they would. Too much of a distraction.

the worse the contract is we take back, the better youth/picks will have to be. gimme a drummond/kp front court.
There are different degrees of bad contracts... Turner, Anderson, Crabbe... those are BAD contracts... three more years (when Melo's is 1 or 2) and at big money for middling players, at best.. and minimal if any short term cap relief so we can sign one more guy or just have more flexibility.
Then there are the medium bad contracts that are for in the 8-12MM range and end after two years (we aren't players in free agency next year anyway) for guys who can play a role on a good team (Harkless is an example, although not really a bad contract at all).
No matter how much or how little leverage we have, we are the team with the best asset, and any trade should make our situation slightly better (we know we aren't getting much better)... so yeah, we don't get a young all star or future likely lottery pick, but we shouldn't have to get saddled with a bad three year deal and we should get some little combo of a pick/role player. The Rockets are more desperate than us... they are the ones that need another guy to have a prayer of winning a title... our season is meaningless next year. We could bench Melo just to amuse ourselves.

If we're going to take on a contract longer than melos we need to unload Joakim Noah. Send him to the Nets along with one of the other teams 1st rounder
NY Out: Melo, Noah
NY IN Lin, Harkless, Hou 1st
BK Out Lin
BK: Noah, Por 1st, Qi, Crabbe
Por Out: Harkless, 1st, Crabbe
Por IN : Ryan Anderson
Hou Out: 1st, Ryan Anderson, Nonguaranteed contracts, Qi
Hou In: Melo
Not sure if it works contract wise but something like that I'd go for.

Oh, I don't want RJ, but I wouldn't cancel the deal because of it. He expires the same time as our other bad deals so in 3-4 years (when our young guys are HOPEFULLY developed), we'd have MASSIVE potential Cap Room and a GREAT core that grew together.
That's the idea. I don't know if they can ACTUALLY execute it tho.

Oh crap.... now that I think about it Isiah is hanging around MSG working for the Liberty but you know he's still boys with Dolan and Mills so has their ear in giving his input. This doesn't bode well at the top of the decision making process and it already may have influenced it as indicated by the THjr signing which very much stinks like an Isiah move.
RJackson is an Isiah type player, too, so bleh....

Melo can request a cheap buyout of his present deal with the Knicks and then go anywhere he wants. So long as he opts out of the final year of his contract (he has a player option for 18-19, I believe), I think it's doable.
