I think it's more how Melo or Bron want the team assembled, not necessarily how the FO sees it. The trade to move up to pick Napier was one way Riley tried to appease Bron.

Seriously...gotta think Dallas is still looking around though. FElton should definitely be a bench combo at this point.

Combo? He's used to that

If that is true, I expect we will hear Lebron news by TONIGHT and then everything will fly into place.

Oh, no. If they meet today, expect an announcement by at least Thursday.

These players are divas, and will milk every second of this.

Ken Berger ‏@KBergCBS 27s

Knicks not fully eliminated from Pau Gasol chase, source says. But they're far behind Bulls, OKC and Lakers. Spurs on periphery.

Doubtful. If there really is a meeting this afternoon, I am almost sure we will hear Lebron news tonight.
Agents and Owners can not be happy that this is holding up the entire free agency.

I would have to do the math again, but I believe we won't be able to offer a max contract (or close to it) if melo is making his max with proper raises.

I think if he makes 20 mill next season, we would be close to being able to offer the max to someone like Gasol.

Again, we really need someone to break it down for us without the mistakes that I may have made.

We should have or at least close to it.
No one can break it down properly due to the fact that we don't know how much the cap will be.
It's also a lot easier(not a given) for a player to leave a little money on the table knowing they are joining a star already in place. If Melo take a little(again, not a given) less then you would have a little more room as well.

Also who's to say JR and Jose will even be here by next off-season if Melo is here?

That's even more room.

From an earlier post of mine:

"If Melo makes 20 mill In 2015/2016, Knicks will have about 15 mill in cap room with JR (counting opt-in) and shump (counting QO) on the books."

This was assuming a 65mill cap and some other assumptions. Like you said, hard to say, but I think Melo at 20mill makes life a little easier for everyone. At 18mill per, it makes life a lot easier.

From my breakdown, I want Melo at 20 mill. I am unsure how much his max is, but it would probably be 24mill or so in 2015/2016.

That 4 mill means a chance at a max cat would come through letting Shump go and his cap hold of 4 mill and hoping JR opts out or moving a few million through trade (like THJ).

Even if Melo is at 24 you still work around him. Winning teams have never had problem doing it before. You can maybe trade for yoru second star. That's how the Lakers got Gasol. Heck, it's how we got Melo. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Simply looking at one avenue is the wrong approach when building around an established star.

I'm sure his agent has considering he gets a percentage of it. lol

True true.

The other thing is that if it's the LeBron "You have to improve" thing that Melo is using, it could be particularly relevant in his case because Melo went on and on about how he wants to win a title OVER money.

So there is a potential embarrassment factor to taking $129M without the Knicks having improved a lot. If he comes after another move, it makes it look less like a money grab.

Cynical a bit, and I don't think Melo is that kind of guy. But coming with Gasol or whoever could give him some cover for his Super Max. Or even if it's less of a PR thing than a personal thing, it provides some justification.

Just throwing out possibilities for this curious delay when a) the Heat can't afford him really, b) the Bulls can't afford him really without a S&T and there are apparently no talks ongoing there, and c) the Lakers can pay him well (though not as well as the Knicks) but otherwise make almost no sense.
