I agree with you, Smart doesn't make sense and right now, I think we need both Precious and Mitch, so it doesn't make sense on 2 levels.

There's team building for the 2025 playoff run and roster building for future trades. Adding Bogs last year kind of helped both of those categories. He gave us more than Fournier did and he was extended a year further, so he was a trade chip.

I think we give up too much size if that Smart rumor has any truth to it.

Precious could walk after this year, if another team offers him like 10 to 12 million per. I don't think NY could match that. Mitch might have more trade value next year as an expiring, so . . . I don't know. Wait and see I suppose.

if hukporti becomes a legit rotation piece, it might be smart to capitalize on trading precious's contract before we lose him in free agency imo. there is prob a good list of players we can get with 20 mill in salary.

We have his Bird rights. He can be signed for any value up to the max. But we no longer have matching rights. The 1yr deal is because of flexibility. But Thibs clearly likes him.

People thought the Knicks couldn't aggregate players to get KAT but they did.
The list of tradable players is what they could use this year and next, aggregated or not. Might be a marginal one for one move.

I was specifically talking about trading this year (eg right now) for someone like Marcus Smart, who makes about $100,000 less than Mitch and Precious combined. That wouldn't leave the Knicks enough space to pay, eg, McCullars and Hukporti the minimum, assuming they sign TJ Warren or Shamet or whoever. They could sign McCullars, Hukporti and Jaramaz - maybe Jaramaz in Spain makes less than the rookie minimum???

So you've essentially traded

Mitch, Precious and TJ Warren (or Morris or whoever)

for Marcus Smart, McCullars and Jaramaz.

Agreed. The starting rotation is set, even without Mitch. If Shamet needs surgery and we go out look for bench help, then maybe I can see something getting done with Mitch. But I think that Thibs wants to see Mitch and KAT play together because of defense.

I think we sign Morris or Bullock to that 14th spot. Huk takes the rookie 13th spot.

We then use Precious, Payne and McBride as our main bench rotation with Huk (or Sims) getting like 10-15 minutes to serve as the "Mitch Robinson" surrogate until Mitch comes back to his 20-24 minute role.

It makes a lot of sense. 8.5 man rotation.

This latter part that they can't send more players out than they get back is because almost every team is in the same situation as the Knicks -- meaning those other teams can't take in more than they send out. So it seems like a 2-way cocq block BUT

Teams like Charlotte are below the first apron so they CAN take in more than they send out. For example, we could trade them Sims for a 2nd round pick. We open up space, they get a cheap player with great hair.

Now that "we showed them our 2nd unit with Sims can destroy their first unit" they will definitely want Sims badly!
