If that becomes the case it will be because of injury. Shumpert has the potential to be a rotation player on a good NBA team. I don't think he's good enough to start on a good team though.

Nah man. That's like worst case scenario. I really think he will carve out a niche with a coach who can actually coach. He's already a good three and D guy. With a few small adjustments he's there already. If a good 3 and D guy is all he's going to be, he just needs to realize it and embrace it.

Shump's 'frustrating' slump continues

NEW YORK -- Iman Shumpert is in the depths of what he labeled a "frustrating" shooting slump.

On Saturday, Shumpert went 1-for-7 in 17 minutes, 39 seconds of playing time and scored just two points in the New York Knicks' 95-87 loss to Memphis. The guard missed all three of his 3-point attempts. In a sign that head coach Mike Woodson may be losing faith in him, Shumpert played just seven minutes in the second half and two in the fourth quarter.

Iman Shumpert's face says it all.
“I ain't never been in a slump before, I don't really know how to handle it,” Shumpert said. “I've got to just try and do a better job of not letting it affect the rest of my game.

"When I'm open I'm supposed to knock shots down. And lately I haven't been doing so. It's just frustrating for an individual to go through that and for [Woodson to substitute him for offensive possessions late in games] just in case he's not knowing when I'm going to snap out of it."

Shumpert has scored 19 points in his last eight games. He is shooting just 14 percent (6-for-42) over the eight-game stretch. On the season, Shumpert is hitting just 35 percent, nearly 5 percent lower than last season. He's shooting 31 percent from 3-point land, down from 40 percent last year.

When asked about Shumpert's struggles before Saturday's game, Woodson had a simple explanation.

"You got to be able to make shots," the coach said. "He’s had some looks. He just hasn’t put the ball in the bucket. I’m not telling him not to shoot. He’s just got to keep playing his way through it."

Tellingly, Woodson also mentioned that Shumpert "lost a lot of his summer" because of injuries and didn't get a chance to develop.

Shumpert had a procedure on his surgically repaired knee over the summer that affected his offseason training. As has been reported, the timing of the injury angered some in the Knicks' organization.

Shumpert has been named in trade rumors for several weeks. The Knicks were close to completing a deal with Denver to send Shumpert there in exchange for forward Kenneth Faried, but the Nuggets reportedly wanted a first-round pick.

The Knicks were not willing to include the first-rounder.

Not long after, the Knicks’ Iman Shumpert came out. He had worked weights until sweaty. Then he began to shoot. Clank. Clank. Clank. Short, long, to the side. It’s like watching a little kid tossing rocks at a distant bottle.

If Shump is so thoroughly incapable of transcending personal disappointments with how the club and coaches are handling him, then it is better to trade him. Whatever talent he does have and can still be developed won't be on display as a New York Knick.

I'm disappointed with how he has been handled, but I've also grown disappointed with how fragile he is psychologically. Until he gets his head straight, he will never be an excellent NBA player.

Trade him while we can. Our time with him as a part of the future is over unless there is a big overhaul in management and the coaching staff.

Lately ive been thinking about having a Ray Allen type of vet on the team to help out Iman.

Not necessarily to help him out on his shooting, but to just teach and show him how to be a pro in this league. Iman and Jr have been best buds, Iman probably respects the hell out of Jr and follows his mannerisms. Iman recently goes on twitter and calls out "fake" Knicks fans or fans who criticize him. And who else does the same thing? Jr Smith. I dont follow any role players on other teams, but I feel we have the two dumbasses in the league who are soft to criticism. I know there are people out there who take it too far with their criticism, but their are tons who give him constructive criticism and he takes it way too personal. He and Jr love to talk, but they can never seem to back it up. So please just stay quiet.

I want to keep Iman, he is without a doubt our best perimeter defender and can be a valuable role player for us if we ever get this roster into a championship contender. But I just cannot keep defending Iman especially after his performance against the Grizzlies. One of my favorite terms is "mental midget" and Iman is slowly going into that category along with Jr.

Some guys don't handle trade speculation well. The pre-Anthony group began a tailspin once the rumors of an imminent trade emerged. I also don't sense that he's ever really recovered from his rookie year injury. He really was a shut-down defender at that point - but he's not one today.

I don't think he's doing it on purpose anymore. He's risking getting traded to Charlotte or Milwaukee or something like that, who'd want that.

I honestly think he's successful reduced his trade value to zero....nobody will take him without us giving them a draft pick.

Nah, it's not that bad, rookie contracts always have value because they're cheap and players still have some potential. We'd probably have to trade him for some draft bust like Rivers or Fredette, though.

I feel bad for Iman. This was supposed to be his breakout season and he's now officially the worse starting guard in the league.
I still believe he'd look better as a small forward though, our stupid staff has tried to use him as a point guard.
He's not worse purely than a guy like Kawhi Leonard, but you can just see the difference in developing players when you're Gregg Popovich and when you're Mike Woodson.

Shump will just do better elsewhere, no matter where. We are league bottom in leadership and player development.

Shumpert doesn't need a new team. He needs a new coach and system. Once Woodson threw him under the bus, it was over. Woody has no clue how to handle personnel. Shumpert may never be a star, but he will be a useful player for years to come....for somebody.

I remember when Fields came into, I think it was his 2nd season, shooting horrifically.. we all hoped it was just an awful slump that he'd eventually pull his way out of.. weeks passed, then a month or two.. And then eventually we realized it was a long enough timeline to be more an indicator of his true game than some temporary glitch in his game.

I'm hoping this is something Shumpert can just snap out of with a few makes in a row.. but the longer it goes on the more I have to wonder if this is, more or less, what he is.

When did our current staff use him as a PG?

Under Woodson, Shump has been a G/F.

And yes, I'm sure he could be developed better, but a coach's system has nothing to do with Shump being a poor ballhandler, finisher, and missing WIDE OPEN shots.
