The Alchemist was fantastic. Completely different kind of book for me, but was good for a different kind of perspective.

Great book for perspective. Inspirational for sure

Good looks my guy. I tried to read Art of War when I was a lot younger and the analogies and verbiage were confusing to me. As I'm a lot older now, I'll re-read it for sure.

Alright the mangas I have read this year are...

Rurouni kenshin 1994 original series
All 28 volumes

Fullmetal alchemist
All 27 volumes

Golden Boy
All 10 volumes

Tende freeze
All 36 volumes

Gintama
Currently reading.

Golden boy is fuqin hilarious. It's a classic. The anime version is also funny. It's a must read and watch. The eng dub is surprisingly better than the sub.

I saw the golden boy anime. that **** was mad funny. Should I read the manga?

if you like golden boy check out Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). it's probably the funniest think ive ever read/watched out of any medium. School Rumble and Prison school are also very funny

As for Kenshin, I recommend watching the Tsuihokunen OVA. it was really damn good

anyway my favorite manga is Berserk. It is my favorite narrative of all time, including out of movies, literature and western TV shows. It's full of violence and profanity that make sGame of Thrones look tame though, so it's not for everyone

The manga is as hilarious as the anime. You should try and give it a go. Read it online, I got a couple of good site for you if you need it.

Yeah I'm a huge rurouni kenshin fan. I have read the manga, also saw the anime tv series and watched the movie(live action/anime).I know most didn't like the ending to Reflection, but I thought it was an appropriate ending for kenshin.

As for berserk, that's also a classic. Top five all time manga and anime in my opinion. Its definitely up there with akira as one of the best manga anime.

I saw gto but to me it wasn't as comical as golden boy. You should check out gintama, lol its quite funny.

Thanks, I'll hit you up if I cant find a site for Golden Boy

I never read the Kenshin manga, only watched the anime and all the animated movies. I also liked the movies, and thought the ending of Reflection was pretty epic and powerful ending to the journey. Thinking about Kenshing's beginnings when he met Seijuko to how it all ended sent a chill down my spine. Never knew there was a live action movie though.

I will try reading Gintama too. I heard a lot about it but never got around to checking it out

It's a great book. Got it for my pops for Christmas. It taught me how to read signs from the universe more than anything.. also how to believe in a personal legend. Fun, light read w lots of undercover game in it.

Told one of my friends he should get it and if he didn’t like it, I’d pay him back. He read the first book in a day and started the second one.

I’m going to go to get a physical copy of the trilogy soon. I read them all on kindle, but these books are special. Gonna reread them after Iron Gold comes out.

read the entire series twice. Was great that there wasn't a decade in between each like some authors

Also, reading The Daily Stoic. Every day, there is a short passage to read and think about. I have a feeling Mecca, NY2TheBay, and maybe Ill would find it interesting.

read a book a friend gave me during the Xmas break. The lies of Lock Lamora. It was different from anything I'd read in the genre before but, I enjoyed it.

Is this accurate?

Spoiler:
Dystopian vs. Apocalyptic Fiction: What’s the difference?
Much has been written that crosses the boundaries between dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction. To me, the biggest distinction is the conflict. Remember back to your high school English literature days… Remember when the teacher would ask you to identify whether a story was “man vs. man” or “man vs. nature”?

Dystopian fiction tends to focus on character vs. society, whereas post-apoc often leans toward character vs. nature or character vs. character.

Hunger Games KatnissDystopia
Common Themes in Dystopian Stories
what it means to be human
corruption
abuse of power
authority
injustice
class system
freedom and the price of freedom
oppression

Examples of Dystopias
These examples go from the more top-of-mind to less so. I also included a quick summary, though it’s hard to summarize such great and classic books!

The Hunger Games: A corrupt state controls the populace through fear and annual Hunger Games
The Giver: Tightly regimented society with only a few who remember the old ways
1984: Classic police state and an oppressive government
Brave New World: Totalitarian state creates caste system and drugs to control the populace
Fahrenheit 451: Totalitarian state controls populace through censorship (books)
Little Brother: Controlling government misuses technology to maintain power
The Handmaid’s Tale: New republic controls procreation and women’s access to knowledge
V for Vendetta: Authoritarian government controls news broadcasts
Maze Runner: Kids are put into a maze and forced to find a way out, similar to Hunger Games
Matched: Each person is paired with their “ideal mate”

Mad MaxPost-Apocalypse
Common Themes in Post-Apocalyptic Stories
Certainly, many of the above dystopian novels can be deemed “post-apocalyptic” as they’re literally “after the apocalypse,” but books that sit solidly in the PA genre generally use these themes:

what it means to be human
survival
civility
rebuilding civilization
starting over
learning from our mistakes

Examples of the Post-Apocalypse
Mad Max: After the end of the world, people struggle to survive
The Walking Dead: Zombies show up and most people turn into the worst versions of themselves
The Road: A man and boy struggle to survive vs. cannibals
The Stand: People struggle to reorganize into societies and find meaning in this new world
World War Z: Eyewitness accounts of the zombie war
Seveneves: 5,000 years after the apocalypse, the survivors return to Earth
Station Eleven: A troupe of actors and musicians keep the remnants of art alive
One Second After: A patriot survives the end of the world and struggles to keep his daughters safe
Wool: The survivors of the apocalypse confine themselves to old silos

What’s Next?
Cover for The Last of the AgelessAs with most things fantasy and science fictional, it’s not always easy to draw a hard line between dystopian fiction and post-apocalyptic fiction. My next post explores what happens when one is the subgenre of the other. Certainly, many of the above dystopian novels can be deemed “post-apocalyptic” as they’re literally “after the apocalypse,” but books that sit solidly in the PA genre generally follow a few themes. While you’re waiting, check out this awesome dystopian vs. post-apocalyptic flowchart. (Though I don’t agree with everything on it!)

That's a really good breakdown. Dystopian fiction tends to have a normal looking society (or advanced) until you dig deeper. Apocalypse usually looks more like a completely collapsed society or one that's being built on the ash heap.

Adding a spoiler here. If you haven't read the series yet, don't read the spoiler.

Spoiler:
My main complaint with the Red Rising series (I'm done the first two books) is that the plot twists have become quite predictable. Every time in the series that Darrow reaches a certain level of happiness or accomplishes some great feat, there is immediately a horrible event that knocks him back down. I really enjoy the series so far and will certainly read everything else he writes, but it feels like he has a formula (let's call it the Red Wedding Formula) and he sticks very closely to it.

Spoiler:
You feel like he did it in the third book too? I can understand that in the first two, but I kind of feel like in the third book,
aside from Ragnar dying and the mini coup d'etat on the Pax(? forgot which one), it didn't really happen in the third one.
