Re: 2019-2020 College/Draft thread (Part 5)
What's good about this draft, if you are pro "Knicks have to get LaMelo" is that he's not a consensus #1, but also there isn't much separation at all between players 2-7 or maybe deeper. Now, I get that that could mean the draft really drops off after LaMelo, and maybe it does, but it also means the Knicks have a chance to draft a pretty good player for the team that grabbed Melo in a S&T of Knicks pick at #6 (if they stay put in the lotto game) and "something else" - picks, players, pick and player, in the swap.

The Spurs and Pop won't let him get out of the lottery if they're anywhere around the 10-14 spots.

Jalen Smith reminds me of Myles Turner. Very intriguing talent

It’s like when lil bitches make subliminal records, if it ain’t directed directly at me, I don’t respect it

He will be gone before 27 though. But would really like him if someone we could get up in the early 20's.

And...LaMelo goes...#3. Assumptions being that whoever got #1 and #2 didn't need a PG, wanted Edwards and Wiseman. Or Obi. Whatever.
Well, for arguments sake, assume Wiseman goes off the board before #6.
I'm not even speculating on teams, just the first 5 are:
Edwards
Wiseman
LaMelo
Obi
Haliburton (to take another desired PG off the board)
Knicks
What's the cost to get LaMelo.
Obviously it starts the #6 pick, and taking the player team #3 wants with that pick.
What's the additional cost? Realistically? I have no idea, other than to compare to the Trae Young/Luka trade, but in that instance, it was much more closely regarded playersThe 2018 NBA Draft-day transaction that sent the Atlanta Hawks‘ first-round pick, Luka Doncic, to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for their first-round pick, Trae Young, and an additional first-round selection the following year will always be a hot topic for debate.
So, the starting discussion seems to be mid to low lottery pick or equivalent AND something more, since there's a perceived talent gap between LaMelo and the rest of the draft, or the usual gap between top 3 and 4-8, generally
Knicks #6, and "______" and "_______"
A dallas pick (not the HS all in year) and a player?
There needs to be someone at 6 that the team at 3 has to like. The only reason the Mavs/Hawks trade works is because Trae was there at 5. I think the Bulls, Hawks, and Warriors could be potential trade back partners. None of those teams really need a primary ball handler and wouldn’t want to take it out of their guy hands. I saw a report that said the Warriors really love Avdija and bet they’d be interested in a trading back for him. Same goes for Haliburtkina for the Hawks and Bulls.
Now let’s talk draft capital. I’m gonna assume it starts with a lottery protect pick for next year at minimum. I’d start with the Hornets 2nd rounder but I’d part with the clippers pick to make the trade happen.

Who you got? Haliburton, right?

Buzz - in your scenario would you trade #6 and both Dallas picks to get LaMelo

What if we trade for the Warriors' pick to get Ball (while taking Wiggins off their hands) and then we use our pick to grab a guy like Okongwu, Vassell, or Okoro. Adding two young + exciting prospects to our youth core would be quite interesting.

Re: 2019-2020 College/Draft thread (Part 5)
Obi Toppin is nothing like Larry Johnson at UNLV. Obi Toppin is not a young Amare Stoudemire. Those that think he is have either never really watched Larry Johnson at UNLV and a young Amare Stoudemire play OR Obi Toppin play. If Toppin was anything like these other 2 guys at their relative times he'd be getting talked about as the no.1 overall pick.
Just think about it for a second. A 6'9"-6'10" UNLV version of Larry Johnson (who was only 6'6") would be just absolutely monstrous. A much better shooting and refined offensive version of a young Amare Stoudemire would also be absolutely devastating considering Amare's manchild physical tools at the time. If Toppin was either one of these he'd be the no.1 overall pick and no one would be disputing it anymore than anyone disputed Zion Williamson as the no.1 overall pick last season, Dwight Howard as the consensus no.1 pick in 2004 or Lebron James as the no.1 overall pick in 2003.

100% agreed. In fact the only Obi I see (in comparison to Amare) is 2011-2012 Stoudemire. Even then Moo, Amare still had a bread and butter 15-18 foot jumper at the elbow. It seems a-lot of fans are comparing Obi to 2002 Rookie Amare which is not founded in reality. There are also quite a few differences among them not worth getting into but I just don’t love the player comp.

i didn't think he would get into the double digit picks. i was thinking he might go as far as like 8 or 9 and even there he looks like a come-up.

Yeah. Toppin compared to a latter in his career Stoudemire would be a better comp though that Amare probably would outweigh Obi by about 15-20lbs and be much stronger.
