We have more information available than ever even if critical thinking skills are in decline overall. Those who wish to create a better world tend to have more empathy or at least have the sense to know it is in their interests to consider how we live today will determine our future as a society.

The zeitgeist is driven by circumstance and to be 15-25 now is to be handed a turd sandwich by older generations. It should fire younger people up and I do hope there are going to be brilliant and thoughtful people who lead from Gen Z.

On the other hand, the empathy and future vision you're talking is often highly abstracted. Those moral frameworks in real life situations can often be highly reductive and absolutist. This too often leads to intractable stances with no ability to discuss and find common ground.

If you work with people under 25 you may have experienced this. Too often I've found they try to find insult in any interaction, are quick to judge and unable to compromise. This is the downside I've seen lately and I've had to manage it in real terms. It is an observation from my life whether it can be applied more broadly or not.

Generational observations aside, it is the times we're in that affects all age groups. Reductionist and absolutist rhetoric rules the day and the person who doesn't seek out knowledge will get swept away by simplistic rationales in the political realms in particular. This is true of people of all ages and political orientations these days.

It always was this way to some extent by dint of human nature, but the information deluge means those who seek knowledge and avail themselves of this are doing it amidst a sea of purposeful disinformation, lazy thinking and bad intentions. Information overload is something few humans manage well any longer.

Even well-intended people can be made dumb and callous by the world today if they don't learn to think for themselves. Being well-intentioned is simply not enough any longer whatever generation you belong to. I wish the next generations all the luck in the world, because the ones that preceded them did not care so much about the world they leave behind.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about the first part because in my experience these kids learn really quick and have a lot of technical skills we had to learn in college or the real world. While being much more critical than we were...but I started HS not long after 9/11, so maybe we were just abnormally gullible because of how scared everyone was.

Agreed about the rest of your point. They're actually better, we've just put them in a worse environment...and you an see that in the way it's affecting other generations too. They're probably handling it best, because they're growing up in it.

The part you disagreed with though may also have to do with whom you're exposed to. You may have had the good fortune to interact with a more thoughtful community of people overall. Here in Florida, my exposure to the workforce of average high school graduates has not been so complimentary.

Based on proximity, your results may vary.

True. I'm in the midwest and have spent more time out west lately than out east...am in northern NM pretty often and took care of my sister in the Bay Area before she passed...and I've only ever been to Florida for a chess tournament when I was a kid

Thanks man, the bast 7-8 years have been really **** to the family. Lost three grandparents, the grandaunt who raised my dad, a sister, my father, my mom had a stroke that she's still limited by, and her cousin who was like a sister to her growing up just got diagnosed with breast cancer a week ago.

So it's a good thing that the Knicks prepared me to deal with loss

Thanks I've gotten a lot better at processing the pain & appreciating the time I had with them, though my dad really shook me. Wasn't until the next summer...and breaking up with my ex of 9years...that the waves of pain started becoming rare enough for me to deal with them at my comfort.

Oh brother, I'm sorry to hear about all that. That's a rough stint. We've had losses like that in my family too but not a sibling. That's a tough one. Don't forget to take care of yourself too. All that stuff has a way of piling up on the inside.

Yup. There's a lot of unpacking that comes along with such huge losses. I can empathize. I lost my dad of 99 years two summers ago and my 93 year old mom this past summer. I've been living in the house with them during their final years. There's a lot to process. Hopefully, you come out strong on the other side.

Yeah I started riding my bike for at least 12-13 miles a day last spring, which really helped. But ever since it's gotten too cold to ride outside, I feel like I've been really low energy & anti-social again.

During the service for my mother, the Imam said that one's life never truly begins until their parents have left this earth. I think that there's something to that.

Peace.

You're going through it and not everyone will affect you the same over time. The breakups can do a number on you initially, but those do end up in the rear view mirror at some point. Your folks will always be there, but it won't always hurt even if missing them will sometime make you weepy. Mostly, it will be fondness that remains so keep trucking.

On a cheerier note, I propose that we start referring to our 4 guaranteed starters as "iHart OG RnB", regardless of who ends up in that 5th spot.

Lots of winter sales for men's outdoor gear going on now. Windy days are always an issue but if you dress right, you'll be fine once you get the blood flowing. For me, I really don't clear my head for the day until I take that long walk with my dog. Check out REI and the UnderArmor apps for lots of big sales. I'm looking for some new base layers and shells. I totally get the bad mood syndrome from not exercising.

Yeah, I was actually thinking of bundling up to go for a ride the other day before this snow rolled in. I still do a good bit of exercising, I just don't have my daily 45min+ of cardio outside anymore and those always put me in such a better mood.

The first 10-15 minutes are a drag. After that, you'll feel great. Supposed to be great day tomorrow. Sunny and 45. Just do it!
