Not sure how a 93% rottentomatoes critic score and the 2nd highest box office opening ever can ever be considered "getting bombed." A lot of people didn't like it, and a lot of people did. Nobody is wrong and nobody is right. That's the good thing about an opinion. Unless of course it's something objectively stupid like "is KP an alpha?"

Disney has these critics in their backpockets

I felt the same way the first time I saw TFA. Also felt it with this one too...that is, first time viewing the movie, the scores disappointed me. Second time when nothing was a surprise I could more closely listen to the music and in both instances the score improved. The music when Luke comes outside to face Kylo was fantastic. Sure, the scores aren't as good as the OT, but John Williams is still the master.

I don't like aggregators unless their on some "it's been at 100% for three whole days" tip. I have some sites I like for reviews and give those more credence but it's purely because they tend to match my personal tastes. I dig Film School Rejects a lot.

OK.

I liked...
- the porgs and crystal coyote things (so cute!)
- Crait was awesome. The red salt was very cool.
- Luke / Leia meeting. That was 100% natural and loved what Leia said with the hair.
- The dice fading away I thought was symbolic of the end of the Skywalker era. Very sad, but I thought it was nice.
- I actually liked Rose's character. Maybe a little out of place, but I still thought it was alright.
- Luke becoming one with the force was awesome.
- Luke force projecting himself was perfect (although I didn't like the dirt off shoulder thing). Most powerful Jedi ever?!
- The boy at the end using the force to pull the broom to him was a cool tease.
- The nuns on the island.
- Canto Bight was a good idea and I thought it was done well. It might have only been me, but the music reminded me a little of the Cantina music.
-Benecio Del Toro's character was awesome. I LOVED how he showed that bad is all a perspective and how even the "bad guys" are playing both sides of the coin.
- The Praetorian Guard scene was cool (the fight and I thought they looked awesome). Shoutout to Lumiya's lightsaber whip they sort of used!
- Holdo taking the ship through Snoke's ship was awesome. That entire scene was BEAUTIFULLY done from the ships being shot out of the sky, to going to her, taking hold, and then once she went through the ship the silence.
- Puppet Yoda (right? wasn't CGI?). Would have been cool if they went with force ghost for Anakin and/or Obi-Wan as well, but the Yoda one was cool.

(I'll quote this post if I think of more.)

I'll say it again this movie has lower audience scores than Attack of the Clones. If you think this movie will age well you're smoking crack. If anything it's gonna look worse when Sheldon is back and we realize there was no plan for the Trilogy. ESB worked so well because it was built off a contained story. This is a sequel that ignored the first movie, didn't advance the plot at all, and is full of crap plotlines. I'm telling you I gave it a 5/10 but I swear it should be a 3.

1) Empire wasn't received warmly when it first came out

2) If you think Lucas had the trilogy planned from the start, you're crazy. Vader was not even thought to be Luke's father until Empire was being written, and Luke and Leia were not siblings until Jedi was being written (see: them kissing in Empire). He made it up as he went along too.

3) This is a sequel that ignored the first movie yet literally picks up where the last one left off and has numerous references to TFA. There are subjective opinions, but to say it ignores the last movie is ridiculous.

Ok, so the A rating the movie got from Cinemascore, that's irrelevant too? Batman v. Superman has a positive rottentomatoes user rating score. Need I say more. Ok I will, Justice League has a 78% user score...Just because YOU don't agree with the critics doesn't mean they are wrong.

I do agree with your last point. I don't give a crap if you like it or not, I liked it, you didn't like it as much as I did. We aren't gonna go to war here. But, there is a vocal minority on the internet taking this way way too seriously. All of our discussions on here are cordial by comparison.

IMDB let's people vote from the second the movie is announced and the score has tanked since the movie came out. Cinemascore is dumb too everyone gives movies high scores on there and there's nothing encompassing about how thwy get the scores. Attack of the Clones was hated by fans and it got an A-.

This movie is getting killed by everyone but critics and the only positive I hear from people is "it was different" or "it surprised me". IDGAF if it was surprising if the surprises are stupid. Sure Leia flying like Mary Poppins surprised me. It was still awful.

So you fully expect the box office to tank yes? Or do you think people willingly go see a movie that 'everyone" kills? If you think everyone but critics are killing it, you must only be reading things that fit your viewpoint. And that's fine, but you're flat out wrong with the statement that it's getting ripped by everyone. This thread alone there is more than just "it was different" or "it surprised me."

1. Empire wasn't as well received as the original but there might be 5 movies ever that well received. It definitely wasn't **** on like this movie.

2. I never said Lucas planned it all. I said it worked because they added to a contained story. He made a lot of stuff up but he wasn't rewriting things that previously were setup to be expanded in other movies. I see a lot of "people are mad Rey's parents aren't important" but that's a legitimate criticism when the last movie focused on her heritage so damn much. Why give us multiple scenes about her wondering who her parents are complete with flashbacks to them if you're going to retcon it into nothing? Its bad filmmaking. If TFA was a contained story and not a setup it would be different.

3. Finn character development is gone, Luke immediately throws the lightsaber, Luke says "I came here to die" and "I didn't want anyone to find me" but he left a **** map to himself that was literally the whole plot of the first movie, the overarching situation after the end of both movies is exactly the same, etc. I mean obviously they don't completely ignore the movie that's dumb and you know damn well I didn't mean that. It's not like there's all new characters and a completely new war being fought. Stop playing dumb. This movie didn't advance the universe in any way at all.

WTF are you talking about? Star Wars is going to sell. Period. It could literally be the Emoji Movie just named Star Wars and released by Disney and it will sell.

Someone tell me any major game changing developments from the enslaved of TFA to the end of TLJ. Please. There are none this movie was pointless which wouldn't be a problem if half the movie wasn't trash.

I can respect other people's opinions and I'm happy that there are people who like the movie but it's driving me crazy how many positive critic reviews are based solely on the fact that this movie is different, as if that's the only friggin criteria to making a good movie.

The thing about taking risks and being different is that...it's a risk. Not all risks work out. Risks can fail, they can go poorly. Well, not according to today's movie critics apparently.

So many critics and their positive reviews are on this tip, sorry but I've got my tinfoil hat on - it seems like Disney has these dudes in their pocket since they're all saying the same vague, positive things in their reviews. At least some fan reviews go into real detail about what they liked beyond "it's different". For the critics, it's like they were handed their orders from Disney, "Write a positive review and make sure you talk up how it's awesome because it's different".

"This movie is awesome because it tears everything you love about Star Wars to the ground!" Okay...why is that awesome? Just because? Even if it's poorly executed? Any troll (or fanboy) could do that. If so, I hope I get hired to do this to the Harry Potter series in thirty years because it's not difficult.

I don't have time to respond to all this (I literally don't have the time, this is no insult to you), but right away your third point is wrong. He didn't leave the map. Watch TFA again, the map was to the first jedi temple where it was speculated he went. This is fact. The only reason R2 had it in him was for the same reason Kylo Ren had it (recovered from the archives of the empire). To say Luke left a map is flat out wrong.

Also, him throwing the lightsaber is symbolic of many things. A) that the lightsaber doesn't mean nearly as much to him as it does Rey or the audience, and b) to show Rey that he has no intention of coming back. He exiled himself, throwing away the lightsaber would be the only logical move, that is to tell Rey, you made a mistake coming here.

Finn went from a runaway, selfish stormtrooper who only cared about himself, then only caring about himself and Rey, to literally trying to sacrificing himself for the greater good. If that isn't an arc, I'm not sure what to tell you.

I think it's more a case of 1) Star Wars fans are a passionate fan base and people are emotional and overreacting 2) Everything in today's age is either the best or the worst. There can't be a middle ground. It's annoying. There are a lot of 1/2 star and 1-star reviews on RT. That's stupid.

I don't like TLJ but it's not as bad as the Prequels.

Nah the old dude was given his part of the map from Luke directly iirc. Maybe I'm mistaken though.

And I know what throwing it away symbolizes but that's not what matters. Logistically this is something that belonged to his father, a prized heirloom he should've never seen again. Throwing it away makes no sense and is first in a line of "that's nor Luke Skywalker" type actions from Luke.

And Finn definitely cares about more than himself and Rey at the end of the first movie. Like really they regressed his character heavily and him not dying completely ruined his storyline for a horrible forced romance.
