It happens to every Knicks draft pick. They are all forced to adjust their games around free agents on 1 year contracts, then the cycle repeats itself next season. Then when it comes time to decide whether to offer the draft pick their second contract, the front office doesn't know what the player is capable and they trade them to another team and watch them flourish.

This cycle has been in effect for decades.

Instead of building their own team, the Knicks go into every free agency period trying to sweet talk free agents that have no interest in playing for the team. Also, the fact that these players are around 26/27 years old, which means the young players become expendable.

Pistons win! Pretty good tank night. Wizards and Wolves lost but I'll take it.

Give me an example of a Knicks"s rookie scrub that flourish on other team after we give up on him.

Good for the tank but bad for our second rounder.

I think (or at least hope) we will be looking to package the LAC and CHA pick along with one of the youngsters (probably Knox) to move up.

We don’t know what the back half of the lottery will be yet, but opportunities may arise. Teams who have big paydays down the line and cheaper owners might move back.

Duncd on actually called the possibility of DEN moving back in 17 because they had to pay everyone. We know how that turned out.

Define flourish. Do you mean they become superstars?

The only one I can think of without thinking too deep is Gallo. Other than that they’ve all played the same, worse, or much worse.

From what I’ve recall reading it was the Cavs who had serious interest in RJ and would have considered moving up in that draft.

Cam might have been too much of a reach though with the 5th pick. I wouldn’t have been too mad (depending on what additional assets we would have gotten) but am sure a lot of guys here would have lost their minds if we had done that.

Ariza? Frye? Lee?

I dont think you can say the Knicks "gave up" these guys. They traded them to get theoretically better players, didnt they?

Ariza was traded to get Francis.

Frye was traded to get Zach.

Lee was not resigned to get Melo.

The Doncic X Trae may become interesting if Cam turning out to be a good player.

Doncic or Trae + Cam will be a very tough decision.

We can frame any transaction as a means to get better.

Doesn’t make it any better of a decision.

The Lee one I get b/c we signed Amare, though at the time I thought we should have kept him to play together.

Ariza and Frye? Those were fails as those guys went on to have good long careers as role players while the guys we traded them for did have the win now impact that clearly was the motivation.

That’s the fault of those shortsighted enough to do so.

I don’t agree with Cam > RJ. Same reasoning. Way too soon to judge anything. Let’s revisit this 2,3,5 years down the line.

The Clippers are easily the deepest team in NBA history. Their second unit is a better playoff team in the East.
