This is Derrick. Like I said, for graduation or contract reference (literally the only bad things he's ever said of all the 8 years in Chicago), there's interviews like these. He's fantastic in the community. He paid for a infant's funeral who was killed by gang violence. Last year he donated 1 million dollars to the After School Matters program, which supports 15,000 kids in Chicago, and surprised them at the Adidas store downtown, giving each kid a $500 gift card to shop at the store.

And I do want a tight team that gets along. One of the things I did like about last year was there were no malcontents on the Knicks and for almost two decades this franchise brought in real dicks and chemistry has been very rare around these parts. This character aspect is one area where Jackson is way ahead of previous management. So if Rose is chill, I'm pleased.

He's definitely got the attitude you want when building a team.

It was just time for him or Butler to go. It was neither of their faults, they have actually known and liked each other since Jimmy played junior college with Derrick's best friend, but Jimmy had surpassed him and it would never be his team until all the guys from the Thibs regime were gone.

It's life man, relationships play themselves out. Uncalled for that the media started putting his name down after propping him up when he was MVP, but it is what it is. Derrick will be 1st to say that it doesn't affect or change who he is either way. He's a winner and I think everyone in the Knicks locker room will be ecstatic to get him in there.

I hope everyone sees what Phil is getting at.

He consistently looks for guys who have chips on the shoulder, something to prove. Rose is the highest end version. He's gotten bargins this way.
He's seeking guys with good character, who are big time driven, and/or with something to prove. At the least team oriented and good teammates. Let's review a few:

Rose - contract year, determined to be great again, chip against being undervalued, low cost as a result of injuries, Chicago rebuild
KP - Selected as much for attitude as talent. Incredible family support who are all driven to have him succeed.
Aflolo - bought low, didn't commit long, viewed as good guy who slipped, I think the hope was he'd have "something to prove"
DWill - bought low, didn't commit long, hope that he grew a little more into his talent

Ah, I got tired and didn't want to go through the full list. But when you think about the guys, and look at the attributes of the summer league invites - scrappy, chips, tough - I see a trend. Galloway, Lance Thomas - there is a certain character to the bench and even some of the starters.

I'm sure he's in Melo's ear a lot with "The league, the media, they don't respect your all around game". I'd say Melo responded well - best all around style of play since he's been here.

I really don't think Derrick could have landed in a better situation than NY. He already has a star there who is older than him and can take him under his wing and take a lot of pressure off him on the court and in the media. Then, he is coming in to replace Jose Calderon, so no pressure there, just don't be worse than Calderon and the fans will appreciate you, so that's easy. He's got Phil Jackson, who knows all about Chicago as well as NY, so they will have a lot of connection there during conversations. He's got the bright lights and the big stage, which he lives for. The opportunity for him to revive his career and redefine his legacy is there.
