he signed here because we offered him full salary/years. he signed before a second max was a lock and we never did get that 2nd. so no, that had nothing to do with it.
and saying jordan hill made that trade possible is ridiculous anyway, he was a throw in.

His shot selection should improve in the NBA because he's not going to be among his team's first options. He doesn't seem like he has had good coaching up until now. Hopefully Phil can help him in 2012.

He works hard and is a good kid by all accounts.

DraftExpress said he has shown flashes of excellent court vision. But tries to be too fancy at times. Again, good coaching at the NBA level will help this.

He's from Georgia Tech and we all know how well guards from GT have worked out for us ;)

Seriously though, we drafted on physical potential and upside and that's a good thing. He seems like he can defend the wings in the NBA tomorrow if need be. He only needs to be an adequate offensive player if he can defend at a high level. Maybe he'll become better than adequate offensively -- he has the gifts to do so.

He's an exciting gamble.

According to multiple sources, Walsh took a poll of the Knicks' war room, of all the scouts and basketball staff, and there was a split between Shumpert and Singleton. Walsh then turned to Mike D'Antoni, who said he wanted Shumpert. That's when Walsh declared, "Shumpert is the pick" and the selection was submitted.

anybody else kind of happy this is walsh's last pick for us.

Makes sense that of those choice between two defenders, D'Antoni chose the guy who shot better in Knicks workouts. Shumpert acknowledged he shot very well during his workout, Singleton said he shot poorly.

In theory a SG rotation with Fields and Shumpert, which sounds like a law firm, can be a very effective pair. If you consider the Knicks potentially adding another 'star' presumably at the PG spot the 2 guard being manned by Fields and Shump is the type of players you need. Selfless, hard working, multi-skilled and solid all around players.

I'm still not sold on Shumpert but since I wasn't really following the draft to much this year I have to trust Donnie a little. He doesn't get a free pass but he does deserve some benefit of the doubt. I certainly wasn't wowed by the pick or how the Knicks did in the draft overall but at this point I can't make a definitive comment on how they did.

Here's my prediction/player comparison.

Shumpert won't be our starting SG, but he'll grow to be our Shannon Brown.

A high-flying athlete that'll energize the rest of our team, and give us great moments of Melo, Amar'e, and especially Turiaf with crazy reactions from the bench when we see Shumpert make a thunderous dunk over Motiejunas.

I don't expect anything more than that, and while yes, someone like Klay Thompson, Jimmer, or Kemba could've been a starter for us, or Alec Burks with his salivating-worthy potential, none of them were available. And frankly, of those available at 17, Faried or Brooks really would have been no better than what Shumpert will likely give us.

I agree 100 percent. I said this last night but the kid has a ton of potential. By most reports, he is the best athlete in the draft. Young kid that can drive, pass ,and play D. He seems to have decent court vision and can somewhat control an offense at 6'5 which is rare. And as you said, the stuff he needs to work on can be coached and he can learn. You can't teach 6'5 PG's or a guy to be athletic. That is natural and he seems to have good shooting mechanics and I know Mike D'antoni gets blasted a lot but one thing that he and his coaching staff do very well is help players with their shots. He did it in PHX with guys like Marion and Diaw and he also help Wilson Chandler vastly improve his jump shot to where he was knocking down 3's every game. The kid has a ton of potential and this team gives him the opportunity to come in and just worry about D and making good passes and letting him work on his offense in his own time.

I also don't get people who wanted Chris Singleton, a defensive SF with little offense. We may as well have kept Corey Brewer.

Singleton may be the better player over Shumpert in the long run, but this is one of those situations where you draft by need, not by value -- especially when we are absolutely set at both forward positions for the next 5 yrs, and Singleton's "trade value" is pretty much nil regardless. So if we're not going to use him, nor will he net much in a trade, why waste a pick on Singleton?

Also Motiejunas just screams Euro bust to me.

Jordan Hill wasn't just a throw in. He was a significant piece in that trade alongside our first round pick. We could've gotten it done without him but it probably would've cost us Chandler or Gallo directly limiting how much we'd have to offer in the Melo trade. Hill was by no means a great pick, but ultimately he did help the team by letting us keep more valuable assets for the Melo trade.

While Amar'e very well might've signed with us anyway, but it would've been a much harder decision if he weren't sold that we could build a strong team here which was the whole point of the Jeffries trade. Yeah we paid a high price that I wasn't a fan of to start, but it's paid off. Plus it let us make the Lee trade which brought back AR who was a similar caliber of prospect to Jordan Hill.

I'm just glad the Knicks didn't pick another forward in the first round. We're very bad at drafting them

But we kept the tradition going by drafting Josh :(

I'm reading many responses from people who just don't know the players. They knew about 6 or 7 players in the draft and anyone else to them is an unknown.
