I'm not buying this.

There's no conspiracy by the coach to turn him into a Steve Kerr. Nor is there any hard line stance taken by MDA to have Gallo fill some role without any room for change.

Simply put, when Gallo's out defending, rebounding and running the court, he gets his opportunities for more than just spot up threes. The guy was the best player on his Italian team, so obviously the offense flowed through him. He's no better than the 3rd best player on the Knicks, an average at best athlete with a motor and shot that runs hot and cold. He needs to take a page out of Fields playbook, get in where he fits and take maximize his opportunities.
Amare Stoudamire - check

Chris Paul - on deck

THE KNICKS - WE'RE THE EFFIN' BEST!!!!!!!

I don't know maybe in Italy he was more of a slasher but in the NBA from everything I've seen his offense starts with his jumper. He is able to drive and draw contact to get to the foul line because defenders get jumpy about his jumpshot.

To be fair his shot selection is good for the most part so I think he is doing that. I would like to see more creative use of him, maybe run some screens for him, use him more in p&r situations, maybe that is something Dantoni envisions doing with him later as he matures, I dunno. You never really know where Dantoni's head is at he is the master of the vague answer.

Great posts from Deez and towelie. This thread has really generated some good discussion.

Overall, I think its a combination of things. Gallo, the system, ball movement, the NBA, etc. Basically I just think we need another shooter to plant in the corner so we can "free Gallo" so to speak. Of course he wont be able to do all the things he did in Europe, but Ive seen him do them on occasion.

As of now the best option for the offense is to have Gallo spreading the floor, since hes our biggest 3P threat who teams respect the most. Hes opening things up. I just have concerns that we are hurting him in the long run by changing his game so much, because as towelie said I feel we dont even want Gallo playing in the mid range as thats where STAT operates.

As far as being a point forward or whatever Deez, I wasnt saying he should run it for a long time, but I dont see why he cant run a play/pick and roll here and there throughout the game ala Pierce. Gallo is a good passer with solid enough handles to do it on occasion. Just to give teams a different look more than anything.

Running some plays for him, especially on nights where the ball movement isnt there to get him going, cant hurt either. We seem to never actually feature Gallo with a set play. Everything is for Amare and thats completely understandable, but when we get Gallo going the offense is that much deadlier with an inside-out game.

Aveboogie, nobody in here has said Gallo is exempt from blame. He definitely needs to keep an aggressive mindset out there on both ends all the time. Theres no excuse not to. I just think its rather obvious that Gallo is out there as a spacer first and foremost. We're pigeonholing him. He cant just "do what Fields does" because they have completely different roles in the offense. This isnt a pickup game. If you disagree though thats fine.

Just shootin the sh*t here. As long as the team wins thats all I care about. This month is going to make or break us, and Gallo will be a big reason if we fail or succeed.

But if you can read and understand basketball theory, you can also understand what his primary role is with this team. I suspect that if Fields was a very good deep shooter and less of an athletic hustler, you'd see him fill Gallo's role and Gallo would take a more active role. It really is pretty basic: The SSOL offense needs to have a 3pt threat at all times. Gallo HAS to be that guy now.

BTW, to all the guys saying Gallo can't do this or that in the NBA, I've got news for you....he already has. He has beaten the best off the bounce, he has defended the best very respectably, he can stroke it from deep, he can get to the line, and he can pass. He is an average rebounder for a SF. To say he is too slow, too weak, to nonathletic is asinine. There is absolutely no reason to think he couldn't put up 22-25 every night as a featured player.

I get that there are plenty of anti-Gallo guys but the numbers and history just don't support your contentions.

BTW, Clyde, and with all due respect, Landry is not a very good shooter. His history backs that up. He is a pretty good scorer, though. This team still lacks another long threat. If Landry can improve it, and I think he will over the next couple of years, we could get scary good.

towelie wrote:I blame mostly the system, and I've said it even back during the Chandler/Gallo debates. We're never going to utilize Gallo's full potential under D'Antoni. He sees him as just a 3-pt shooting threat to space the court for the PnR game.

Fields isn't really involved in the offense either, but he thrusts himself into it by: a) getting defensive boards and pushing the ball up the court himself; and b) constantly moving off the ball, cutting to the basket, and going for offensive boards.

We can't expect Gallo to do the same, cause he's just not as quick as Fields. Moreover, because he's our best 3-pt shooter in the starting lineup, D'Antoni probably even told him to stay out behind the 3 so as to space the court.

Still, I don't think Gallo can replicate what he did in Euroleague. Frankly put, he looked quicker and lighter in those videos, but the Euro defenders also looked a step slower. In the NBA, we know he doesn't have that first step to drive past defenders like that. The only time he can is when his defender is rushing out to contest his 3-pt shot...which is probably why Gallo always looks better when our team has great ball movement, but looks pretty invisible on the court otherwise.

I'd prefer to see Gallo develop his pullup jumper and post up moves, cause I think that would serve him better in the NBA. I don't think he'll really get far playing the game he did in Euroleague, because of his lack of footspeed, and in all honesty, his finishing ability off his drives is pretty subpar. But again, the problem goes back to the system. Even if Gallo develops a midrange game, this system won't allow him to highlight it. D'Antoni needs to feature Gallo a lot more in this offense and let him run some pick and rolls with Amare. I knocked his driving ability earlier, but if he gets a good pick from Amare or Turiaf, it's tough to stop a 6'10 forward with ballhandling ability deadset on getting to the basket. Not to mention everyone will try to get in front of the pick to stop Gallo's jumpshot.

I don't necessarily blame Dantoni for using Gallo in that role. Who else could fill that role on this roster? Maybe Buike when he is healthy? We saw late last season Walker became more of the shooter and that allowed Dantoni to use Gallo in more different ways and Gallo was pretty much the main scorer at that point...

Yes the profile coming in for Landry was that he was more of a slasher than a shooter. He has actually impressed me with his shot. Landry has superior IQ so he doesn't take bad shots so it has the effect of making him look like a better shooter than he is. He can hit open threes with enough time to get set and take a good shot but I don't think that makes a good shooter per se. He has a hitch I wouldn't mess with and his release is a tad slow which he could maybe improve but I also probably wouldn't mess with but I think he could definitely be a pretty efficient shooter with his smarts and skills.

I think he defers to easily. There is a certain hop in his step when Amare and Felton aren't on the court. It's like he knows that now its his time to be the focal point. Last game when all the starters but Gallo were subbed out because he was at the line for two minutes we saw that energy and bounce in his step. I've also noticed d'antoni put him in to start the 2nd quarter with most of the bench and then Ive also noticed this hop in his step.

maybe Pringles should put him in with the second unit more. A 6th man role can also be explored if Chandler keeps up his level of play.

I wouldn't be totally opposed to using him off the bench. But it weakens our 3 point shooting in the starting lineup. It would put a lot of pressure on guys like Chandler, Felton and Fields to hit more 3's and you don't want that. Also Chandler is doing really well in the six man role so I dunno if I would want to mess with that. Now if Buike is 100% back that's a game changer right there, that changes and opens up things...

To add onto this Gallo is averaging roughly 16 ppg on 18% usage. That is VERY good. He is doing this without getting any plays ran for him, going multiple trips without getting a touch, and barely taking 10 shots a game.

His points per shot is 7th in the NBA at 1.51
His TS% is 60%
His offensive rating is 7th at 126
His offensive win shares is 9th at 1.8
His turnover % is 3rd lowest at 6.8%
His FT% is 3rd

Hes doing ALL THIS while still shooting below his career percentages! This is the mark of a guy who needs to be featured more! Alot of posters take Gallo for granted, but hes clearly doing something right out there. Nobody is saying he has to be the "number one option" but Its rather obvious to me he needs to be more involved in some way, and Im sure theres a combination of reasons why he isnt. Himself being one of them.

I do agree with that we should run a few more plays for Gallo. I would love to see us use Gallo in the pick n roll. He could even play both roles. Either set the pick or initiate it. Someone actually sent a question to D’Antoni on the Mike D show asking why we didn’t run that more. I can’t even remember what D’Antoni said or understand what he was saying. It sounded like he acknowledged its success, but I didn’t get the feeling he was committed to running it.

We never run any curls or anyone around any off the ball screens either.

But overall its hard to complain about our offense too much or this system when its been working pretty well latly. At least offensively. We seem to have cut down our 3’s. We’re moving the ball better and taking better shots. We can get better, but I don’t think we’re going to see a ton of change in the system.

But like you said, on nights when the ball isn’t moving or the 3’s aren’t going down it would be a good idea to run some plays.

Overall Gallo role should be that of a #3 guy though....If he could pattern his game like a combo of Detlef/Odom/Kucoc/Ginobolli/Derrick Mckie/ray Allen (Celtics) type role that would be perfect

Gallo really is an average NBA player. He may be more skilled than the average player, and certainly have a better shot than most, but he's an average defender, a horrible rebounder and doesn't really create for others.

I like Gallo and think he can and will be better, but until he shows more I wouldn't depend on him more, including changing his role.

If he defends, rebounds, runs the floor and remains active, he will get more than just spot up jumpers. Landry Fields' play in MDA's system has proven that.

The first 18 games - does not include the most recent against NJ Nets.

Based on POINTS scored - hold the game's other stats with the points for that game. Sort on Points and Rebounds.

Split into 3 categories and compare to Gallo's season average.

This shows that when it comes to points, for the season, Gallo is performing slightly below his MIDDLE performance. The same holds true for the categories of Rebounds and Assists.

What he has to do is get rid of the "stinkers" which will decrease the deviation in his output. He needs to become more consistent. Then, he can become the 18/7 player, I and many others think he can be.

Sorry again have to disagree with that. Guys are inflating the average. If we are truly defining the average Gallo is comfortably above it. I know NBA rosters are smaller but still the average player is pretty average and Gallo is comfortably above that. Now if your only looking specifically as starting forwards that's another thing...

I agree with those that mention Gallo belongs in the bench unit (I think Bluest was actually one of the first to propose this idea).

The thing is, like you guys have mentioned, Gallo will defer to teamates, especially when Felton and Amare are on the floor. In the second unit, those guys aren't there and instead you have guys like Dougie playing point guard as if his head is cut off. This is the perfect opportunity for Gallo to play the floor general. The ball can be ran through him and he can still set everyone else up. Without Felton and Amare, Gallo can even take on a more aggressive role in the offense, since I really don't think D'Antoni's offense is holding him down under lock and key (it didn't hold Free Candy down).

However, this is all contingent on Fields improving his 3 point shooting, which I would rather not see happen since he's much better cutting to the basket as opposed to chucking 3's, but I have a feeling D'Antoni may go here if Chandler gets the starting nod.

...and this is Gallo's issue.

He isn't consistent with his effort/energy nightly and it shows in the ebbs and flows to his game. There are obvious opportunities for a guy to assert himself when STAT is off/out of the game. You'd expect Gallo to take advantage of those moments. Sometime he does, other times, he does not.
