thats the elephant in the room id say. what if the cap goes up to $60mil?

Just helps us even more...especially if we restructure STAT's contract and Melo's contract...sign Paul for ~same amount as they are getting paid.

Holy ship. That's huge too. $60M-$61M? Crucial $3M more of room.

Today feels like it probably did on Pearl Harbor Day -- lots of things going on that are crazy.

If that is the case:

Carmelo + Stat = $39,9m*.6 = $23.64m
Tyson Chandler = $14.5m*.6 = $8.7m
Iman Shumpert = $1.9m
Renaldo Balkman= $1.675m
Cap holds ~ $5m

$41m

:D Even if Melo/Stat don't take the full 40% off their annual salary but take 20% we would still be at 45 million = still a lot of cap space for Paul.

Potential $60-61M salary cap in 2012? Ability to renegotiate contracts down?

I'm now kind of leaning that we jumped the gun on Tyson Chandler. I was only for it if CP3/Dwight was an impossibility. It may not have been.

Hang on, this guy's numbers show that cap room may be there for a Max *INCLUDING* Chandler.

... wouldn't this rule essentially allow the Knicks to circumvent the salary cap? Sure seems that way to me.

Its quite the opposite, signing chandler makes this provision that much more powerful. He's another player who could shace money off his contract while keeping him on the team.

Also, to those saying that this limits melo and amare's future earnings, I'm not sure how this would work but i don't see why we couldn't add ETO's (early termination options) into their deals, so they could jus topt out if they wanted to later on.

That's just dreamin'. There's no way all those players agree to significant pay cuts just to accommodate Paul. It would've been easier said than done if Tyson wasn't included, and we were just asking Amar'e/Melo to take $2M/yr less and to tack it onto an extra 5th year. They likely would've done it to complete the trio.

This renegotiation point should be getting bigger play too from the media, especially considering Hollinger was dead wrong on not being able to negotiate down in the new CBA.

Then...don't make them take the 40%. We can do it for 20% as well...still helps us get Paul (especially with a raised cap).

Guys, this is NOT a magic wand.

Melo and Stat aren't going to do what it allows the Knicks to do. It just means they can make xx amount of dollars over 5 years as opposed to 3 or 4.

It won't allow players to effectively play on a contract over the 5 year max.

It won't let players sign new contracts over the newly renegotiated terms.

This isn't the ultimate cap circumnavigation tool.

I appreciate the desire, but it just won't do what we want it to do.

what makes you all think these guys will take less money now if they wouldn't do it before?

On further examination, I dont think this helps us get CP3.

allows an existing contract to be renegotiated so the player is paid a smaller amount over a longer period, but the player's salary cannot decrease by more than 40 percent. Renegotiations previously could only increase a player's salary.

I interpret this as, you just tack on an extra year or two to the current contract to decrease the annual salary that the player's owe.

e.g. Melo and Amare both have roughly 4/80 left on their contracts, or ~20mil owed to them per year.

I think what this is saying is that we can go 5/80 for both players at worst. I don't think we can just cherry pick 2012 salary and subtract 40% because it says: paid a smaller amount over a longer period-- meaning that you have to subtract from the entire length of the contract, not a specific year.

Might as well not sign Chandler and then Convince Howard and Paul to come together next year. They each take 13 mil and we fill out the rest of the roster.

Paul
Shumpert
Melo
Amare
Howard

As I understand it yes we would have to add additonal years to Melo Amare Chandler and decrease the salary enough so that we can offer Paul something similar to waht the rest are getting.
