Surprised to see that China hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. Something stupid can happen if the countries aren't communicating. To strengthen ties, I propose moving the Nets franchise over there.
From what I read, the main motive with Taiwan would be getting all their semiconductor/chip plants. But those are set to denote if China does a full invasion.
USA probably have more time here.
There's the semi-conductor stuff, but I think there's also a nationalistic element too. They've basically taught their population a certain thing through their history classes, so they really can't back down, and sometimes they need to actually rein in the more nationalistic parts of their populace on social media so they don't inflame the populace. And of course, it's a really good political tool -- if things are shat economically back home, it's nice to be able to point to Taiwan or the Senkaku Islands to shift attention.
But it could also be dumb stuff like planes flying too close to each other or water cannon spraying in the Philippines. Hell, there was that one fistfight with India a while back...stuff like that. When tensions are that high, one dumb thing can really screw things up if you can't communicate, and it looks like they need to bring back communication.
Thinking of someone like Stanislav Petrov during the Cold War...he really kept a cool head during a moment of crisis, but the story illustrates how war can really be started by dumb incidents.
