thoughts on Jay Wright?

Just like all things Villanova, you won't find anyone who loves Jay more than me.

I don't know if the pro game works for him. He's so demanding and so much of what he was able to accomplish was because he had complete control of the culture.

Villanova had a few wilderness years in between their first F4 appearance under Jay in 2009 and their Nat'l Championship in 2016. That was because he started recruiting 5 star McD's All Americans who thought they were bigger than the program.

It wasn't until he made all incoming recruits commit to 3 years otherwise he wouldn't sign them that the culture changed and Nova become the machine it did under him.

As a tactician and basketball mind, he's brilliant, but just like Coach K and Pitino, I don't think he wants the ego management and 100's of variables that come with the NBA. He didn't even want to deal with NIL.

But the Knicks have always been his NBA dream job, and I've heard rumblings from plugged in people that I still know from the Nova community.

I know everybody is excited here, but the Knicks better have a good replacement in mind.

Say what you want about Tom, and I'm was one leaning that he should get fired, you can't really say he lost the locker room. I think the players, Brunson in particular, liked him a lot.

The thing I fear now is that this was a James Dolan decision. And we all know, when he's the one calling shots, **** goes sour.

This could be our Doug Collins to PJax moment. Or i can be our JVG to Don Chaney

Or Mark Jackson to Steve Kerr moment.

And also, I don't think this was a Dolan decision. This definitely feels like a Leon Rose one.

I'm still in shock. Never would I have thought the Knicks have all team would fire a coach that took them to the ECF (a beating the defending champs right before).

If you listen to enough podcasts, there was definitely a lot of "He remembered he had a bench" going on, and you heard it on broadcasts too.

I think the nail in his coffin was how the bench didn't play all season, then he just hurls them into the game when we're down 2-0, and it actually helped.

Before I respond I want to say- Thibs...I respect you greatly. You are an example of what it's like to stay commited to your purpose no matter the age or obstacles. I want to thank you for everything you have done for our franchise. I wish you nothing but continued success.

Now...when I read the title my first response was:
Spoiler:
YES! YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

I did not want to go on strike for years again  Now I won't have to. I really like this team.

I heard so much about "The Don"

Leon, you showed me that you have what it takes to EVOLVE!

I do wonder if this would have still happened if the Knicks made the finals or not

Oh god no.

He’s Thibs but with 5 out.

Short rotations, doesn’t hold top players accountable, offense is predictable, defense is predictable, wears out his welcome after a while.

This is a pivitol decision for the reason you outline. There are coaches who could raise the ceiling on this team compared to Thibs but the median coach is a lot worse than Thibs.

If they stick the landing, I expect the knicks to be playing at the best team in the EC level next year. If they fail with the hire I expect a real regression. Either way the Knicks performance next year will be different.

Probably. But the real nail in the coffin was Game 1. I think he'd still be coaching on Thursday.

Thibs did a great job here. 5 seasons, 4 playoffs, 4 series wins, an eastern conference finals.

But it was clear that he wasn't the right guy to get this roster over the hump.

I thought he was coming back and had earned the right to come back, although his seat would have been hot.

Coaches are hired to get fired. Thibs leaves the organization in a better spot than when he took it over.

Not sure about the Mark Jackson comparison. But IIRC, it was just a couple of first round exits. He never really took them far.

I can't really say Tom's tenure was bad with the Knicks. And I don't think he was severely holding the team back like Mark Jackson was holding the GSW back.
