Yeah I don't think the author likes us much at alland I don't blame him. You ever see his fan art of Captain America?

You know those crappy knock-offs of sci blockbusters? This looks like someone said let's do that for Jurassic Park, but make it more like Skull Island and hire some real actors.
I'm taking my son when it comes out and will report back

Yeah, his books are kinda dry. The world building isnt nearly as vast, kr detailed, as others. But I really fck with how 'realistic' they characters are in his stories. I know he is labeled grim dark but that just feels more realistic. One of my favorites of his was the wild west fantasy book he wrote. It was a refreshing unique blend in a genre that can get very stale.
Youre not the first I've heard have issues with his writing. A few of my friends find him flat out boring.
Im kinda embarrassed by this but I've never read Hobbs. I have some of her books but just haven't gotten around to reading them cause I push other books to the front. Ive never heard anything bad said about her books either. Maybe once I finish this book ill actually crack one open. Though I was really looking forward to reading either the locked tomb series or the bloodsworn saga. Too many damn books to read and dot is out here rereading thousand page books.
What made you choose Soldier Son series over the The Farseer Trilogy?
I actually finished the Farseer Trilogy a while back. So the amazing (and crazy thing) about Hobbs is that she has a bunch of trilogies under the Realm of the Elderlings name.

So it starts with the Farseer Trilogy and then it ends with the Fitz and the Fool Trilogy, which concluded 20 years later in 2017. Really really good and you see the character age and grow. But yea, I'd start with the Farseer Trilogy. I only discovered recently that she wrote a different series called the Soldier Son series, so I'm diving in now, and it's great, too. She does a good job of bringing you into the character's minds.
I'll look up Locked Tomb and Bloodsworn Saga.
Appreciate the the response.
Ill fire up Farseer next. Ive been putting it off for way too long. And after checking I have the first 2 books in my library.

I finished up Soldier Son today...best thing I can say about it is that I had TV, video games and all that waiting for me, but I had to finish the series first. I think Hobbs does a good job in creating drama without resorting to epic battles and she does a lot of exploration regarding societal expectations/roles in a fantasy realm, as well as the loss of identity/self.

lol.
Not the highest ringing endorsement. I'm still going in on the The Farseer Trilogy when I finally finish ths Sanderson book. Tbh, epic battles, fights, even the magic stems aren't that big of a deal. I need to fck with the characters, world, conflict. I just enjoy those things in a fantasy setting. And theyre usually easier to invest in that setting.

That’s the guy that did Barbarian, right? Great movie, I’d be interested in anything he does

I loved it. Best Marvel movie since Infinity War.
Damn that good? I had the other Avengers and Spider-Man No Way Home as really strong.
Thunderbolts and No Way Home were good, but this film kept me on the edge of my seat from the end of Act 1 til the post credits scene.

I already got my tickets for Saturday. 2022 and 2023 straight up spoiled the horror fans, and I think 2024 and, so far, 2025 have struggled to keep up. But Bring Her Back was a gem and I've heard nothing but hype for Weapons (Jordan Peele fired his agents after he lost the bidding war to produce it).
The indy horror scene feels like it's on the rise. Indy movies are getting picked up more since companies see horror as easy profits, and I've seen some incredible work done on shoestring budgets and out of Youtube horror shorts crews. Beezel, Best Wishes to All, and Milk and Serial are all Youtube Shorts that wound up expanding into full-length quality horrors. Plus, the Phillipou bros have all the juice right now.

Did you watch Nosferatu?
I have my tickets too, going Friday afternoon. Can't wait

Nosferatu had amazing cinematography and acting performances, it's a very good movie. But honestly, I might prefer the Last Voyage of the Demeter's actual "horror" aspects.
I think I have a bad bias with Eggers, because I've been waiting for him to top the Witch since it dropped. I have a similar issue with Osgood Perkins. I like all his work, but nothing is close to The Blackcoat's Daughter for me.
