They play dirty. They get away with it for some reason. ORL/DET/MIA/CHI/PHI all play dirty. Pushing off. Moving/illegal screens. Purposely putting feet in the landing area. Lots of contact and no whistle.
To your point though, we need to just punch them in the mouth early and slug it out. We need a more physical/metal bats approach. We lost that with the KAT trade. I don't see the all grit no quit mentality we used to have.
I watched a few minutes of their game against the Warriors, and the Warriors were complaining about the physicality the Magic were allowed to play with, while they were getting called for fouls that didn't need to be called.
The reason the refs allow those teams to play playoff-style basketball on the defensive end for 82 games regulard season games, is because they think it levels the playing field against superior teams.
The only time teams are allowed to match the aggression on the defensive end against those teams you mentioned is in the playoffs, and that is when the superior teams give them a taste of their own medicine and eliminate them from the playoffs.
I get some refs call the game differently, but one thing that annoys the sh*t out of me is the inconsistent way picks/screens are called.
First off, Knicks always get the bad whistle there within any game.
But other games, I see guys moving, put their leg out, no fouls called on either team. Next game, different crew, screen setter moves his eyebrows - offensive foul.
Just call the games the same way.
